Kitty report

Mo-kitty went under the knife today -- the vet just called to say that she did well and is waking up from the anesthesia. They keep warning me, though, not to be freaked out when I see the size of the incision. Which of course is the elephant in the room. *freaks out a little* And they had to put in a drain that'll come out next week, and they're pumping her full of IV fluids that'll make her puffy, and giving her a little Elizabethan collar that'll make her bitchy ... she'll be a real bundle of joy when she gets home.

They're keeping her for a few more hours, so while I wait not freaking out being otherwise unproductive I thought I'd toss out a handful of Merlin recs that are absolutely fabulous.

He was supposed to protect his people, starting with his servants, and if Merlin believed he couldn't come to Arthur with this then of what purpose was Arthur? I am claiming full responsibility for this amazing story, because I mentioned to Jo that I hated not getting to see what happened when Merlin returned to Camelot. Instead of the Gaius-returns-from-the-dead zombie!fic she teased me with, she wrote this gorgeous peek inside Arthur's head. There are so many reveal stories in this fandom, and I adore them, but this one goes deep into Arthur's thought process as he puts everything together. Simply wonderful!

After an incident on a routine patrol Arthur gets into trouble that he wasn't expecting. This is a 44K word adventure that I simply cannot rec highly enough! I almost didn't read it -- it's a bodyswap, and that genre usually doesn't draw me in. But the author takes that gimmick far beyond where it usually goes, using it to develop some frankly profound insights about the characters that made me stop several times just to let them sink in. Not only that, but it's tightly plotted and paced, and even connected to the legend. *loves* Definitely a new favourite of mine!

Backfire by [info]oxoniensis
In which there are giant ears, a curious cat, backfiring spells, a stick figure Arthur, some unfortunate truths and some very welcome ones. Now this is wonderfully cute! This fandom is made for crack, and this is a very tasty chunk of it. I loved how the author amps up the qualities that are hinted at in the series, tosses in a dash of amateurish magic, and ramps up the consequences. And HP fans will surely recognise and applaud some of the spells that show up here!

Not All That Fantastic by [info]bakarini
Arthur is left servantless at a feast, and sets out to find exactly what Merlin thinks is more important than serving him. In which Arthur finds out that he is not the center of the universe, and Merlin has a sex life. OK, this is a WIP, and I don't read WIPs as a rule, and I certainly don't recommend them. So how did this get here? First, admittedly, through ignorance--I didn't realize it wasn't finished. But each of the 4 chaps so far is pretty much a standalone. And each one hits some of my biggest kinks: voyeurism, exhibitionism, unbelievably hot wallsex, growing obsession, more unbelievably hot wallsex. Like the summary says, Merlin has a sex life -- it's just not with Arthur, who is turning more and more into possessive!Arthur with each chapter. And did I mention unbelievably hot!

Destiny Revisited by [info]lavvyan
They're both less innocent than they were a thousand years ago; less trusting, more broken. This time, Merlin is the one who gets called on his behaviour – and it's true, he thinks ruefully, he'd stopped bothering to learn the names of those around him long ago – and Arthur is the one who refuses to leave anyone behind. This time, Merlin is the one saying words like "idiot" and "moron," and Arthur has the stupid ears. I've mentioned this story to several people but I haven't recced it yet, and I need to redress that now. If you've read in the Atlantis fandom you're familiar with Lavvyan's wonderful stories -- here she ties all I loved about Atlantis to Arthurian legend, and not like SG-1 did -- this feels real and uncontrived and just perfect!
