Oodles of Merlin Recs

I haven't been reading nearly as much as I'd like lately, just no time, but I have been stockpiling up some recs I wanted to share. This turned out a bit longer than I planned, even after whittling down a bunch. I'd say sorry, but I'm not. ;)

Setting Down the Lines by Phantomjam
In which Arthur hates stairs, Merlin threatens mutiny and they're both going to be a bit late for the feast. I have to start with this story because it holds a very special place in my heart. I think it's perhaps my favourite future vision of them yet. Merlin has a tower! And Arthur has Merlin, and it's complete and perfect. Phantomjam's created a wonderful hideaway where we can all live in denial and be happy forever and ever, and I want to cuddle it so tightly.

Privileges of Rank by Seperis
Arthur's biggest problem to date, Merlin thinks darkly as he carries yet another load of suspiciously not-really-dirty clothing down the stairs, is an unaccountable fear of anyone, anywhere, suspecting he's capable of being other than a complete and utter prat. I just read this today and really enjoyed it. There's not enough attention to court intrigue in this fandom -- and what little there is focuses on the nobility. But Seperis has obviously seen Upstairs/Downstairs and knows there's just as much politics amongst the servants. Her Arthur is wonderfully sly and regal and protective and I just love him.

When Trust Is A Thing Not Given by Aelora
Arthur just wants Merlin to trust him. Merlin thinks that he does. The kind of reveal I've envisioned, tilts just dark enough to satisfy and comes through with unwavering loyalty to the characterisations. Beautifully written and deeply moving.

Reciprocation by Astolat
He only meant to complain; you didn't take serving girls on hunting trips, and the alternative interpretation didn't even occur to him until Merlin said indignantly, "I'm not going to do that!" Do you need a reason to read Astolat's stuff? This involves a brilliant characterisation of Arthur, a pretty steep learning curve, and wickedly hot smut.

Into His Own by Sarcasticchick
Merlin thought nothing of it when Gaius dropped the first clay pot. It was, after all, an empty pot. I've already mentioned this before, but it deserves to be included here. Sarcasticchick builds on the events in Le Morte d'Arthur and goes on to create an epic tale of the next decade in Camelot and beyond. Quests!

Dark Skies At Night by Shantirosa
King Arthur is displeased when his sorcerer risks his life. Much as I love Phantomjam's blissful future, this one is far more realistic. It's a real tear-jerker. Excerpt: "He may be out of the king’s favour, but he is never out of Arthur’s. And Arthur is the one he’s loyal too; Arthur, who can only really exist in the dark, when eyes aren’t on him anymore." It's not a long piece, and if it weren't for the depth of her insights you might call it PWP, but I think it really speaks to the kind of lives these two powerful political men are in for.

Two For One by Greensilver
"Yes, fine, there's a lady in the lake and she has your sword." I adore stories about storytelling where you can see the man behind the curtain. That's the sense I get here, as you see how the Arthurian myths were really made. It's just a simple little tale -- I would have loved more -- but it will make you smile.

The History of Two Conversations (On Paper) by Takadainmate
Books are defaced. But it's all for a good cause. Really. This is the perfect example of the kind of delightful stories this fandom excels at. It's another reveal story, but more -- it's as much about Merlin learning who he is as it is about Arthur's discovery. Her characterisations are really something -- layering on what we know, but with increasing familiarity and growing humour.

Drastically Redefining Protocol by Rageprufrock
This is the AU (finished now!) that's broken my brain. Arthur, Prince of Wales, crashes headfirst into Merlin Emrys, medic, when he ducks out of visiting cancer kids. A multimedia extravaganza, there really are no words for how perfectly wonderful this story is. Also, watch this amazing video trailer.

I think that's it for tonight. Happy reading, folks!

Wee! Bookmarking for a rainy afternoon. Thanks. :)
You're welcome -- I know you're going to love them! There are some brilliant stories in this fandom!

(Have you finished the series yet?)
Wonderful! Thank you so much for the recs. I have to many fandoms and can't keep up with them all. I love Merlin but just don't have time to go thru everything. I really, really appreciate it when someone goes to the time and trouble to rec Merlin! I will be checking ALL of these out.
Oh, thank you, I'm happy to help! This fandom is incredibly rich -- I know you'll find some stuff here you'll like.
