Meme, then Vacation!

Most everyone probably thinks this journal's dead by now, long as it's been since I updated. Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated, but it was touch and go there for a while!

Having said that, I have now finished all that needed to be finished before my vacation began, and this spot will be on real hiatus for a bit -- at least until I sort out internet-y stuff.

And in an effort to fill a few hours before hopping on the plane (without having to do anything unfulfilling like hoovering), have a meme:

Meme Me )

Right! Stay well, everybody! I'll catch you on the flipside!

It's all about me

Another meme. Yes, I know it's overly long and indulgently egotistical, but I've been poking at it for the past few days and it's been a very nice distraction.

Oi what a timesuck

So the next time I think "oh, a meme, that's a good way to kill a few minutes before bed," somebody just shoot me.

This is the movie meme that's been going around, supposedly with one entry per day. Since I fail at that kind of routine, here's the whole thing in one shot.

Tomorrow, there'll be sun

Up today, a song that no one would expect you to love: Tomorrow by Andrea McArdle. I don't know if anyone would expect me not to like this song (even if it does shatter whatever tough grrl image I hope to project), but I don't think anybody knows how much I love it. See, Andrea McArdle was my first girlcrush, and I didn't even realise it until years later. I saw her sing this song on the Tonight Show when I was 13 years old; somehow I got a recording of it on my little cassette tape, and I played it every single night before going to bed. I wanted to be her best friend, I wanted to give her kisses, I wanted things I didn't even know that I wanted and I loved her so much it hurt. I begged my mom to take me to NYC to see her perform in person, but I got the standard answer of "people like us don't go to New York/Europe/anywhere interesting at all ever."

Then I grew up and became a punk rock girl and would have denied to anybody that, once upon a time, I couldn't go to bed without hearing this voice singing me off to sleep.

If things get real promise to take me somewhere else

At this point, it should be painfully clear that I have commitment issues and cannot even stick with a meme for 18 days. I'm going to catch up with two today.

A song that makes you fall asleep: I'm nervous about flying, so whenever I'm on a long-distance flight, I put on this CD, take a sleeping pill, and have myself a glass of wine. So I'm not sure if it's the song (Feeling Oblivion by Turin Brakes) or its accompaniments, but whatever, it works like a charm. (And I was tickled to see that this video is all from the air. Absolutely gorgeous!)

A song from your favourite band: Favourite band? I've always thought that was the hardest question in the world. But my longest musical love affair has been with the Velvet Underground, and all their solo projects. Since their videos generally suck, have a slice of Velvet Goldmine sparkle instead. (And oh, it's been such a long time since I had a chance to use my Venus In Furs icon. I've missed it!)

Bist du da...

Oops! I missed yesterday completely (what did I do yesterday? Oh yeah, lookie!), so today I'm playing catch-up...

A song for a certain event: So many, but I'm going to go with the terribly predictable right now, Unzertrennlich, because this is a beautiful video. And I think you all know the certain event. Aldi and I were watching together as it aired, literally crying with happiness, and hardly believing that after so many months of working on EKP -- which we began expecting nothing to ever happen again! -- that this story was really coming true. So yes, the event was a plotline on a soap, but it was so much more.

A song you can dance to: Just listen to Living With the Dreaming Body by Poi Dog Pondering and try to keep from moving. Like they say, "it's hard to be with one when you're in love with another," but you might as well dance about it.

Mi corazon tiene la culpa

Very quick update today, with a song from a place. I wanted to choose some bachata, which always reminds me of living in the Dominican Republic where it was played from morning to night. This is one of my favourites -- Antony Santos' Corazón Culpable (Guilty Heart) -- but unfortunately it happens to be accompanied by the cheesiest video in the universe. I advise you to turn up your speakers, click on the video, then step away from the computer. Pouring yourself a rum and coke while you're up will get you in even more of the island mood.

Music for the morning

I thought I'd start off the day with my music meme, before life gets in the way. My happy song is Downtown, by Petula Clark, of course. Do I really need to explain why this song is happy? Just listen to it!

But I can explain why I love it so. It was released the year I was born (yes, older than dirt). Before I was born (when she still had time!) my mom made an amazing baby book for me. Part of it was dedicated to happenings around that time, and this song was the first one listed in the music section, surrounded by her fashionplate-quality sketchings of Twiggy-like models in houndstooth swing jackets and flamboyant hats and miniskirts. She loved the song and used to belt it out, and I still hear her voice instead of Petula's to this day.

(Well. That was unexpectedly appropriate for Mother's Day, wasn't it?)

Because I am a sheep

you are saddlebrown
#8B4513

Your dominant hues are red and yellow... most of what you do is motivated by your need to change things and have a good time, but you've been known to settle down and think out a situation, too. You tend to surprise people just when they're starting to feel like they've got you down.

Your saturation level is high - you get into life and have a strong personality. Everyone you meet will either love you or hate you - either way, your goal is to get them to change the world with you. You are very hard working and don't have much patience for people without your initiative.

Your outlook on life can be bright or dark, depending on the situation. You are flexible and see things objectively.

I'm brown... like dirt... yay?

But yikes, that's scarily accurate.

That poetry meme (ganked from everyone by now)

When you see this, post a poem on your journal.

This one is by my favourite poet, Billy Collins, who wrote one of my all-time favourite poems. Here's another... )

Mindless character meme

I updated to Firefox 3.5.8 last night -- now I'm going to new tabs, but the URL stays the same. For instance, right now, in addition to the dreamwidth posting page, I have tabs with the GOOL home page open, my LJ flist, the GOOL registration page, EKP's videos page, Neil Gaiman's small bee blog, and two friends' pages. The URL for each one is http://lilithilien.dreamwidth.org/. Hmmmm. Also just noticed that my refresh button is shaded and doesn't work. Oddness.

My brain's feeling sluggish so I'm not attempting much tonight, but I ganked a character meme from [personal profile] seanchaidh.

Catching up

By now I should know not to do those daily memes:

Day one: a song
Day two: a picture
Day three: a book/ebook/fanfic
Higher Education by Resonant. (Bender/Brian from The Breakfast Club) This story's been around for a long time, so many of you have probably read it, but if you haven't, give it a try--it's one of my very favourite fanfics.
Day four: a site A Softer World
Day five: a youtube clip

Day six: a quote
Day seven: whatever tickles your fancy

I'll have to come back for those last two--this is hard work! ;)

Also, Dollhouse rocks my world, OMG. (Merlin did too, but not in the good way.)

Is Monday over yet?

Today has been one of the most taxing days of my life -- my emotions feel completely frayed. At the same time, I'm pretty sure that parts of my life are extremely blessed and sprinkled with sparkling fairydust. I'm going to have to catch up on yesterday's comments tomorrow, I'm afraid. Tonight all I can manage is a meme.

Day one: a song
Day two: a picture
Day three: a book/ebook/fanfic
Day four: a site
Day five: a youtube clip
Day six: a quote
Day seven: whatever tickles your fancy

I'm way too sleepy to title this thing

So I've apparently given up sleep. I've been trying to wean myself down to just 5 or 6 hours a night -- I'm not about to be sleeping away my vacation while [info - personal] aldiara and [info - personal] shellydkitty are bouncing around Köln!!! So far, my plan seems to be working ... a bit too well, since I'm still up and it's past 6am and I'm only now getting tired...

I'm heading to bed in a second, but first I just had to squee at bit about Merlin. And especially, about Bradley and Colin. How adorkable is that? I'm going to have to watch the episode again pretty soon, to separate the shallow (hello, Bradley!) from the (hopefully) thinkiness, but this recap sums up a lot of my thoughts about it. And is far funnier about it than I could be!

I was about to say that I wish the series premiere had triggered my muse because I haven't been very involved in fandom lately, and then realised that I spent all of last week doing nothing but. I don't know why I haven't squeezed in a fic or three in the spare two minutes I have each day.

Oh wait, I do know -- because I spent hours repairing the sabotaged AWZ entry on Wiki. Someone with way too much time on their hands rearranged the character lists, moving current characters to the past list and making up deaths for them. I reverted it (and did a heavy edit of the site and of Dennis Grabosch's entry too, which I'd been wanting to do for a while, so yay, motivation!) but then I checked today and they'd gone back in and resabotaged it. And when I checked the other edits this person had made, I saw they'd the other German shows too: VL, GZSZ and Marienhof)!! Uncool! Who's does that?

In other news, I'm working really, really hard to learn German in a month. Ha! But I'm actually picking up a bit. And amazingly, just from listening to CDs on my iPod when I go for my walks, I'm understanding more of what's said on AWZ. (Or at least I think I am -- who really knows?)

And as the sun comes up and the night creeps away, I think I'm going to start that meme that all everybody's doing:

Day one: a song
Day two: a picture
Day three: a book/ebook/fanfic
Day four: a site
Day five: a youtube clip
Day six: a quote
Day seven: whatever tickles your fancy

Belasco's Butterflies -- "You're king of the world 'til the next one is born." Another find from the geniuses in the RTL music department.

And now I truly am fading, so I'm off for a nap before tomorrow's Slasher brunch. Three and a half hours of sleep should be enough for anybody, right?

Notice of Impending Conviction?!!

Yes, that's what I got in the mail this morning. For a traffic violation in Brockville, Ontario on June 20, 2009. Seeing as I haven't been in Brockville for five years, at least, and haven't owned a car since May 2006, I was just a little surprised!

I did call the Brockville City Hall and spoke to a very nice woman who took care of it, but she suggested I call the DMV because I'm still associated with that plate. But the DMV says that no, I'm not, and that apparently the folks down in Brockville just magically plucked my name and address and previous plate out of thin air. Riiiiiight.......

*sighs*

I've had the grumps lately. Bouts of computer trouble -- nothing too serious, just falling offline randomly -- and feeling disconnected from fandom plus too much work does not a happy Lilith make. So I feel the need to do another of those happiness memes to remind myself of what's good. So here goes:

And you know, I think this meme really works -- I'm much less of the grumpy now.

Sugar + caffeine = random post

For the past two days I've subsisted on nothing but coffee and Bourneville chocolates. I really need to go to the store tomorrow. In the meantime, my dear flist, you are getting an even more random post than usual. But it's filled with Things of the Awesome.

Thing of Awesome the First: India decriminalises homosexuality. Right on... and about time!

Thing of Awesome the Second (that is admittedly less awesome in the grand scheme of things, but still incredibly awesome for me personally): Chosenfire is my other BB artist!!!! Wow, wow, wow! Look at the stuff she's done for the SPN Big Bangs! Gorgeous, gorgeous stuff--how lucky am I? *pinches self*

There was something else, I know there was... Nope, it's gone. Now I am giving myself a three-day weekend... and after working 13 hours straight today brain's gone bye! Tomorrow, food!

(And kicking, [info - personal]aldiara, if you don't have a skating scene ready for me to read.)

ETA: I remembered!!! Eon's ago, [info - personal]gealach_ros asked me the five questions meme. Her questions:
1/ Top! or bottom!Arthur?
2/ Bradley plays theatre. What play would you like to see him in (i.e. which role do you think he'd be amazing in?)
3/ Time travel, whom'd you like to meet?
4/ The best thing about being Canadian is...?
5/ Do you sing out loud when you're driving alone in your car?

Day 8 of Happiness

I never did finish that happiness meme -- I have absolutely no staying power (this is why me and diets don't mix), but I do have some happiness to share so let's get down to it:

So there! Meme's done, I can cross at least one thing off the list!
