A massively long self-indulgent picspam documenting my search for tulips

Aug. 17th, 2010

So a storm's rolling in, and for a while now I've been watching the grey clouds crowding out the blue sky working. I just looked up and THERE IS A FREAKING DARK MARK OUT THERE. I am not kidding, you guys. It's a darker grey than the clouds around it, and it looks like a skull with these wispy snakey things under it and IDEK I'M SCARED NOW.

Kitty update

I am SO SORRY for not having a chance to respond to all your wonderful thoughts yesterday. Molly is doing well -- after acting all drunken and crazed last night, she's decided that she's sore and wants to cuddle today. I'm keeping a close eye on her so she doesn't lick her stitches too much -- I'm trying to avoid the plastic cone since the last time she wore one she almost hung herself. (Don't ask -- it's something that only my cat is capable of.)

Anyway. Life is hell right now, even without sleep there is no possible way that I am going to get everything done by Friday that needs to be done. Of course, this is the week that DeRo ends and we have all our two-parters and idiots need to be bashed and Eskimos cuddled and I'm not there to do it. A clone, a clone, my kingdom for a clone!

LOLOLOL speaking of, I SAW THE QUEEN TODAY. Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Mountbatten were right outside my apartment. I'm so sleep-deprived that I'd swear I was hallucinating if it hadn't been in the news.

And Unzertrennlich just came up in my shuffle. O universe, you are trying to kill me, aren't you? Excuse me while I hyena myself back into tears.

And then the earth moved...

We just had a HUGE earthquake!

OK, not *huge*, only a 5.5, but big enough for me to sit here thinking "must be some big truck going by... hmmm, that's not stopping... why did my Faramir action figure just fall on my head... crap the cat's freaked out... oh yeah, aren't I supposed to do something like hie thee to a doorway?"

It was only some time later, when I went to google "earthquake", that I realised we'd lost our electricity, too.

So yeah. I've had my excitement for the week, TYVM.

And I still haven't seen my cat.

My town is bizarre. Also, fic!

Another parade, Ottawa? Seriously? I know it's been a whole three days since the last brass band marched down my street, but did I really need to be woken up to blaring bagpipes blasting the Old Spice theme song?

Also, how many bagpipe bands does one town need?

On another note, Shelly browbeat me into posting bad commentfic. This is entirely her fault.

LOL I've forgotten how to post fic!

Nick Cave

Oh wow, he was even more amazing than I imagined!

Sep. 3rd, 2009

Yes, I know, another soapy post

Why do I love Alles was zählt so much? The incredibly talented [info - personal] shellydkitty has the answer to that question, in video form:

On a completely different note, are any of my Ottawa peeps in town for the long weekend? And if so, are you interested in heading up to the Hill and watching hot air balloons and eating gelato? It's supposed to be gorgeous both days, and I'm determined to squeeze every last drop out of this summer.

A mixed bag of an update

It's been ages since my last update -- and really I should go to bed, but after 1/2 of a bottle of prosecco, what better time to update?!

Lots of good things recently... let's see where to start:

-AWZ is off-the-charts brilliant these days. I could gush but Today's episode really says it all! )

-Making plans with [info - personal] takhys for Carnivàle Lune Bleue. (Must reread Geek Love before that!)

-Got a call yesterday from an old friend--she'd moved out to the country, which meant I never saw her, but she just recently moved back into the Glebe. Now we can hopefully be more social! We're going downtown soon to check out the Busking festival.

-re: said Busking festival: I was at the bank a few days ago behind a bunch of mimes. The RBC tellers have enough trouble when I talk to them, god knows how they handled miming!

-The Merlin Big Bang previews look AMAZING! I am so excited about all this!

-We made it through two days with almost no rain--could summer finally be here?

I really should go to bed now ... but it's much more amusing watching my catnip-crazed cat go nuts! *taunts her*

Jul. 25th, 2009

More rain? Are you kidding me?

Are Dementors lurking over Parliament Hill? Is it not enough you've already sucked out Stephen Harper's soul?

Where is my summer?!!!!

Jun. 13th, 2009

That's the secret word for this weekend. Last night [info] - personalparaka and I went out for her birthday. We started with pizza at the International Elvis Sighting HQ (aka the Newport), then wandered down to Westfest, a really sweet little all-Canadian festival. Jenn Grant, the new love of my life, was playing, and she was fabulous and darling and I wanted so much to bring her home with me! Instead I came home alone and engaged in youtube stalking:

Her band last night was pared down -- just herself on guitar, a fiddle woman, a guy on stand-up base, and another on bass clarinet with detours into xylophone. And help from the crowd. It made for a great sound, and a really mellow evening as we watched the sun go down.

(I also snagged a free CBC button, which pleases me in a more nerdy way than it probably should.)

Over the past few days I've made some writing progress. If I can just wrap this one scene up tonight, I'll have three more left. Granted, they're the biggest action scenes in the whole story (96 pages of build up before anything happens is fine, right?), plus I need to fix the smut, and come up with a title, and about a zillion section headers, and ... *breathes*

And I'm bummed right now because I'd like to read through the whole thing on one go, but my ancient printer is not working. :( It's not reading any black cartridge. I've replaced it twice, and no better. (But that's nothing compared to my panic today when my computer told me that Rodney [my external HD] was connected, but blank. OMGNOES! Fortunately it was just having a brainfart and when I restarted it remembered, "Oh right, I do have 500MB of your most valuable information here, sorry!")

OK, I'm not to think of technology now. Oh, right, sociable, yes. Tomorrow is Slasher's Brunch, yay! Get to see my girls! *cuddles* It's been too long.

And, um, that's my news, I believe. I hope everybody's enjoying the weekend!

Ottawa's going to be interesting this summer

Oh, I am amused. A full 16 months since his arrest (that he's spent in office), our mayor is finally going on trial. Now the federal Tories are worried that he might say bad things about them, too. Oops! Sucks to be you!

Last night's meet up with [info]pierspaul was tons of fun. I shared squees from my European adventure, she had me in stitches with tales of DIY bathroom reno. All accompanied by Guinness and piles of assorted dips, mmmmmm. One was a hummus/roasted onion spread that was to die for. I'm going recipe hunting for that one.

Afterwards I futzed with DW until I got a layout I can live with. It's a modified transmogrified. Simple and clean. But I miss my Bradley/Colin banner--I'm tempted to buy a DW account just so I can fiddle more.

But I should not fiddle! I should write while work is slow and I have time! Only...I'm at the point of my Big Bang where I'm looking at all I've written, and looking at the outline for the rest, and none of it making sense anymore. ATM it's tempting to chuck the whole thing! Fortunately [info]seanchaidh is coming by this afternoon to write with me. She'll talk me down from the ledge.

I also realised that my writing style is being affected--for both good and bad--by my soap. Each scene is from a different POV, could be filmed in 1:30-2 minute segments, and ends on Dramatic Eye Flashes. Dun-dun-duuuuun!

Speaking of my soap (gaze in awe at the smooth segue and see how all roads lead to Alles Was Zählt!), [info]aldiara noticed that AfterElton is picking up our translated clips now! Pretty exciting! And we've got over 800 subscribers now! *boggles* It's a good time for it too, because yesterday's episode was inexplicably good! Like two-years-ago good! And I know I'm just in store for more disappointment, but I'm biting my nails waiting for the next episode. Oh, Show, don't break my heart again!

I've been in Canada too long

This is a sign of how thick my blood's gotten: I just took my dog out for a walk and it was so sunny and warm that I took off my jacket. I had a sweatshirt on underneath and I was perfectly toasty. As soon as I got back home, I checked the temp -- it's 1C (34F).

Spring is definitely here!

Off to brunch with my slasher girls now... I hope they remembered to change their clocks...

Feb. 7th, 2009

I just heard a bus go by!!

You don't know how happy this makes me! Sixty days without buses, people! I don't have anywhere I really need to go today, but I think I might just go ride one around the city anyway, just because I can!!

Nov. 14th, 2008

Very disturbing news...

[info]bunnysquee, why no peppermint Baileys?????!!!! NEEDZ MOAR NAO!! You've got to fix this!!!

The LCBO guy was great tho. When he said that LCBO doesn't carry it anymore he recommended I try caramel Baileys instead. I said it was too sweet and he said, "Yeah, they're going for the crack cocaine demographic," then made this bizarrely hyper face. *loves*

Got some regular Baileys tho, got some Guinni, got some cheap Spanish wine. Bring on the weekend!

Overheard while walking home: A girl telling her friend (in English) about meeting some friends last night, and how she went *kiss kiss* to Hélène and *kiss kiss* to Philip and *kiss kiss* to everyone else there, and then she got to Louis and just said, "Um, hi." The other girl said, "Quel dis!" Reason 2,384 why I love Ottawa.

Take a walk with me

Work is still horribly busy -- I can't wait for it to slack off in February! -- and it's leaving me at the end of the day with barely enough brainpower to watch tv. I miss this time last year, when I was embroiled in writing Architects of Memory. Work was just as busy, but I'd slog through each day looking forward to the night when I could put down the words that had to come out. I long for that kind of energy these days. And a story to tell.

But I am keeping myself sane with daily walks. I've done it five days running ... this is a routine! My shortest one is up to Parliament Hill and back -- that's about 4 km round trip. My longest took me across Pont Alexandra to Quebec (I'm estimating 8 km, it took me 1 hour and 45 minutes), and I finally remembered to bring my camera. Unfortunately it's about a week too late for the good autumn colours. Still, I think Ottawa is really pretty. Here's what it looks like in October...

Oct. 16th, 2008

I've started taking walks (that almost sounds like a routine, even tho I've only been doing it for a few days). Yesterday, outside one of the big hotels downtown I saw this sign:

(A haiku for you)
You can park your car
Or we can do it for you
Ask at the front desk.

Today I discovered a footbridge over the canal that I didn't know about and wandered all over the U of O campus, discovered a cute cafe that I must try someday, then stopped in at a new(ish) home store/tea shop and bought Madagascar vanilla tea, which I'm sipping now.

I like my city.

Aug. 23rd, 2008

A very disjointed post

The muse appeared long enough for me to write a drabble for [info]draco100: Potency. Then he promptly buggered off again. Summer's finally arrived in Ottawa—yesterday and today have been gorgeous and warm—so I expect he's out playing. I couldn't take advantage of it yesterday (work has been beyond insane) but this morning I went for a long walk. (I stopped by your store, [info]takhys, for the dvd—thanks!!—and might have picked up a few batik sundresses on sale...)

And now I'm getting the urge to do some spring cleaning. A few months late, I know. So my question is: should I act like a grown up and spend money to turn my tiny apartment into a more efficient living space, or should I continue to live like a student 20 years out, with my clothes in plastic drawers and milk crates? They've served me well, these dear old milk crates, but shouldn't there come a time in your life when your furnishings aren't pillaged from behind the grocery store?

(This existential angst is brought to you by Ikea's nifty wardrobe planner. Evil, evil Flash temptress!)

Fandom is keeping me on my toes lately. [info]sarcastic_jo got me hooked on Burn Notice—Bruce Campbell is irresistible, of course, and it's got interesting, twisty plots ... although I am rather tired of the endless stream of evil foreigners.

Then Eureka went and ripped my heart out ... does anybody else watch that show? I had only just started to recover from it when I heard about Atlantis ... *sigh* Gotta hand it to the SGA overlords—they're a lot smarter than they look. Hot on the heels of their asinine decision to cancel a successful show so they can work on its untried spin-off, they air "The Shrine," a fangirl's dream come true. With the massive quantities of McShep they handed us, it's awfully hard to stay mad at them. Although the thought of not getting my weekly David Hewlett fix makes me very sad. I swear, that man is an insanely good actor.

And then there's the real world, where another Russian blogger is being prosecuted for "inciting social discord" on his LJ. He's facing 2 years imprisonment. *flails* I know that bloggers can't avoid prosecution for breaking local laws, but wouldn't they have had more protection/security (f-locked journals, for instance) before the sale to SUP?

FinallyI see that Biden's been picked as Obama's VP nom. Not sure if it's the best choice campaign-wise—Biden's got some baggage they'll have to deal with—but I do think he would make an excellent VP. He and Obama are both intelligent and I think will balance well. It's been far too long since someone like that has occupied the White House!

Reminds me—I must see if my absentee voter reg is all up to date. *makes note to do*

Halfway to the weekend

OK, I'm seriously out of shape ... and I need to buy better walking shoes. I met J to see Mamma Mia last night, but it was sold out so instead we walked to the Market for gelato and then roamed all over Parliament Hill. (The Catman* wasn't there, but for some reason there was a beaver in the hutches chowing down on catfood. I don't know if he was supposed to be there, but he looked pretty darn content.) I'd forgotten just how pretty it is back there, with the views over the river. But miles later, my shins were screaming at me, and I won't be wearing *those* sandals again for awhile. Ouch!

And speaking of sandals, that's as good a segue as any to A Private Fitting. I love when my flist uncovers kinks I didn't know I had, and [info]inamac does that so well here. I get every bit as squirmy as Hermione just thinking about Lucius in 5" heels. It's a very decadent and very enjoyable fic that is just begging for sequel.

Sadly, it also reminded me of my really, really bad joke, so I feel the need to inflict it on you all: Did you hear about the fire in the shoe factory? Over a thousand soles were lost. Some heel must've started it. *cackles* [info]girly_curl_3, I hope you enjoyed it as much the second time around!

Saturday's in sight, hooray! And tomorrow, Brideshead Revisited!!

* Check out the Cats Blog, with some great pictures of the kitties about halfway down. This, this is why I love Ottawa.

Sunday thoughts

I cannot get over "The Stolen Earth." The ending just left me all aquiver, and those three dreaded words -- TO BE CONTINUED -- did not help one bit. Nor did finding this teaser (emphasis on the teaser) trailer for next week. GAAAH!

Of course, it was Donna and the Torchwood team that did me in. Wee spoiler within. )

Last night: I shared a delightful dinner with [info]trianne, [info]alchemilla, and [info]westmoon. We ate oodles of chili-butter chicken and korma and naan bread at my favourite Indian restaurant, then followed it up with coffees and ginger-flavoured gelato at Piccolo Grande. Mmmmmmm. Delicious food and wonderful company, what else could you want?

Today: It's poor [info]trianne's last day in Ottawa and we're giving her another grey, overcast day, I don't mind it, though, it's the perfect excuse to stay in. And rewatch some more Doctor Who, methinks. I just watched A Noble Return where the soothsayer says, "You, daughter of London, there's something on your back." *shivers*

Oh, and also, very important:
