Ground Control to Major Tom

This is really wonderful. First-ever earth-to-space musical collaboration..

If you're following Commander Hadfield's tweets, (or have been anywhere near Canadian news for the past month) you've probably already heard about the making of this song. (And if you aren't following him on twitter, you should be. He posts the most amazing photographs from orbit!) Here's a bit more about the collaboration: 10 Things You Need to Know Before the Premiere of Is Somebody Singing. And here's the story of yesterday's chat with Capt. Kirk. :D

I feel very sappy about this whole experiment. Space exploration is something I've always enjoyed in science fiction, but never considered on a practical level. Hearing music written, practiced and performed while one person is in space and the other is on earth... it just made the thought of living somewhat normally so far above the earth a little more possible. It's made me dream.

Best thing I've seen all day!

I was not going to post again until I'd caught up with comments, but then I saw this, and I couldn't resist...

Queen Latifah as Ursula in an Annie Leibovitz photoshoot!

See lots more pics of the actual photoshoot here. I want to know where to get the costume. Think of all I could do with tentacles!

I have always thought this

I ordered Chinese delivery tonight, which I should not have done because money, but it was totally worth it for my fortune.

Snack drawer love

Because [info]spaghettitoes declared it Snack Drawer Appreciation Day and because this day has been made up of that certain degree of suckage that forces one to stop by Poundland after work, here is my little drawer of heaven.

Quite likely the longest post I've ever written

There is way too much to update, and I don’t know where to start – and as it turns out, I know some of my friends don’t even know what is happening or where I am, since I’ve been so sporadic about updating stuff. So maybe I will do this with numbers. Yes, that’s a good idea.

[Insert witty title here]

Just a quickie update to say I'm still alive.

Weekend update

I hope you're all having a lovely weekend. Mine's been pretty fab. I had a great dinner and lots of good conversation last night with [info]deakat and [info]paraka. I really love being around people who live fandom, who are always thinking about how it works and how to make it grow -- not just the followers of a particular show or a genre, but the fandom world as a whole. I'd been debating writing something about what fandom means to me -- it's truly changed my life to find a community with so much talent given freely, motivated not by profit but (in the case of writers) by a real passion for storytelling, who create stuff at a level that often exceeds published writers, but who do it out of pure enjoyment and love. The whole topic has seemed such a daunting task, but after talking to [info]paraka last night those ideas are percolating. Even if I never write anything of it, helping make sense of it in my mind is a good thing, I think.

All that's been in light of EKP reaching SEVEN THOUSAND SUBSCRIBERS.

This is just an inconceivable number -- we're getting ever closer to filling the Ottawa Civic Centre! *cackles* Oh, how I would like to try that!

Now I'm getting ready to send off my latest writing and then do something fun like, oh, clip my cat's claws. I got my new futon cover (YAY!) and it looks AWESOME and I don't want it shredded like the last one was.

What an exciting life I lead.

May. 29th, 2010

Last post tonight. I mean it this time.

But I had to record this milestone:

I'm having a little trouble getting my head around the size of this number. That's... a LOT of people. What's even harder to get my head around is how many of you that I've grown to love, online and off, and how much you mean to me. And how I really can't imagine how my life would be without Eskimos in it. Seriously unsparkly, that's for damn sure.

So, my lovely hordes, I leave you with noserubs and many many bottles of prosecco. I'll return tomorrow with magic handwaves to erase your hangovers and embarrassing moments.

My icon says it all

Today I...

* got a new client *ka-ching!*
* finished a bit of writing and sent it off to Aldi
* got thinky thoughts over the next chapter, which is really exciting because I want to dive into this new character
* heard from a dear and sorely missed friend *squishes Rosebach unbelievably tight*
* got squeeful over [info]paraka podficcing one of my stories *bouncebouncebounce*

And now I've got a spread of Lebanese olives, a Spanish wine, and three different kinds of cheeses, which I'm savouring while watching Alice In Wonderland. This movie has the best look ever! And it's like Lord of the Rings on acid. Also, may just I say that Crispin Glover is like walking sex. Walking sex with an eyepatch. He can take me right now yes.

Tonight I refuse to think about the Gulf Coast as a dead sea, Alabama geometry teachers, or my incredibly frustrating father. Nope, right now, life is pretty close to perfect.

The world sparkles today!

Aug. 12th, 2009

Last night, EskimoKissProject got its 2000th subscription!! It took six months to get to 1000 subscribers, and just three months to double that. CRAZYSKATES! (Doesn't hurt one bit that the show is all kinds of awesome these days.)

And if that wasn't enough, we just launched our Alles was zählt fansite.

Behold its wondrous sparkle!!! It's got all sorts of stuff: HQ downloads of our subtitled clips, interviews with cast members, links to all our fanvids and fics ... basically we just wanted to be an English-language resource for fans who love the show but can't do much more than curse in German.

More website stuff )

As icing on the cake, our Trio Infernale was just interviewed! EKP's going to be featured in a blogger's post on gay relationships on European TV. I'm seriously giggling over this one.

Added to that is some behind-the-scenes squeefulness that makes EKP just the best thing ever. Honestly, my icon says it all!!

Good stuff, good mood

I'm playing dutiful daughter: I booked a flight to visit my dad in S. Carolina later this month. For 6 days. *whimper* Still, anything to keep him from coming up to stay with me. That's just a Very Bad Idea.

However! The fabulous [info]sdk lives down thataway! SQUEEE! We are (well, she is, really) already planning my birthday escape! I cannot wait for our meet up! *bounces with giddy glee*

Also very cool (tho to a much lesser degree than meeting Shelly): I got these boots for $14! Well, $114, really, $100 is from an Amazon.com certificate from my boss that doesn't work on Amazon.ca. Since I'm going to the U.S. I'll just pick them up down there! (And just in time, too: my old hiking boots are falling to pieces. Still, I bought them in 1997 and have worn them almost constantly, so I've definitely gotten my money's worth.)

More glee: Winterlude starts tomorrow! Sadly, it's supposed to get up to 7C and rain on Saturday. Yuck. I'll still try to run by and get some pictures of tomorrow's ice sculptures, tho, before they're washed away. (My pics from 2007 and 2008 are here if you want to see--the sculptors are amazing!) There are a lot of good bands this year too, including Ariane Moffatt. (Watch her awesome video for Réverbère and then go write femslash, I know you'll want to. Even if it is kinda Stepford-femslash.) Colin James is playing too tomorrow night; I'm trying to decide if he's overrated and soulless or genuinely talented. Maybe seeing him in person will help.

Today was the most balanced day that I think I've had in at least two months. Since the crush ended, I've really just felt like a slug. But today I got some work done but didn't feel overworked, I tidied up the house but didn't feel like it was an overwhelming job, and I got some writing done that flowed well and didn't feel like pulling teeth. However:

Dear Bradley!muse,

You lured me into RPF with your false promises of quick and dirty porn and now you're angsting. I do not have time for this! I'll give you one more day to have sex with Colin; otherwise I'm writing in a poisonous spider who will bite you and you will die, the end.

Bursting with squeee!

I've been bouncing with excitement all day long! Eskimo Kiss Project went live today!!

You may have heard me, once or twice, mention a little show called Alles Was Zählt. *g* I might have complained about how the subtitles had gotten us up to a certain point in the story, and then stopped. I might have then gone to [info]aldiara, the translator, and offered to help her continue. And then [info]sdk, proving that great minds think alike, did the same thing. And so Operation Eskimo Kiss was born!

For the past week or so, we've been nabbing clips and translating and subtitling like the mad women we are. And today we posted our very first clip! It's not the most thrilling clip of the series, granted, but it's a necessary lull between the last high point where the previous poster stopped and the next bit of lovely that is coming up soon. But it doesn't matter! We made it!!

In conjunction with this project, Shelly also put together a fanfic listing on delicious in preparation for the hordes of AWZ lovers that are going to come streaming out of the woodwork now. About a month ago there was ONE English fic in this fandom. Now look at us!

And coming soon? A website!

And you know what's the coolest part of all of this? Working with two amazing women who care about what they're doing, who are bringing very different but very complementary strengths to this project, who are so supportive when things aren't going as they should, and who are just generally making this the most fun I've had in ages!

I've never been in a small fandom before, and it has some unique challenges, admittedly. But right now it's so rewarding to be right here. Later there'll be plenty of time for, as Shelly put it, "post vids -> ??? -> profit!"

Oct. 30th, 2008

I just won the bidding on an adorable little EEE PC!!! I think I shall call him "Ingo."

Aug. 3rd, 2008

My soul is happy when I have a trip on the horizon. I need to remember that about myself -- I'm sure I'm not the only one, everybody needs to have something to look forward to, but for me, there's just something incomparable about the potential of travel. And not just the vague "I'll probably go somewhere in the spring" kind of thing. I need dates and email confirmations of ticket purchases and that irritating email from my boss telling me it's a bad time to take a vacation. Then it all feels real!

And I say all that because I sorted out my TIFF trip today and have been giddy every since. In a month I'll be glomping [info]bunnysquee!!! I found an incredibly reasonable hotel right downtown, so I'll be there for a full five days -- and I'm taking the train there, which is so much better than the bus (and that was even before the beheading). I have no idea what films we'll see, but at this point that doesn't even matter.

I am enjoying the best weekend I've had in ages. I had oodles of fun with [info]goddessriss perving up [info]sdk's journal last night, then she rewrote that troublesome Sectumsempra scene for me (*squees*), then [info]leda_speaks recced the brilliant Lust of the Conchords which just about killed me (if you enjoy FotC, you've got to check it out). Oh, and I started a brand new knitting project while watching Sex & the City (not a bad movie, I'm glad I didn't pay money for it, but it was a nice accompaniment to a few glasses of wine). Then today I finished my BBTP story!!! OMG that porn came slowly, and it refused to come without dragging along the angst ... you know, I'm almost starting to appreciate JKR's dreaded Epilogue for setting up infidelity like it does. Almost. Now I have two more pornlets that I'm going to try to crank out, and nearly a month to do it. Yep, I do like looking at that far horizon.

I hope your souls are all happy this weekend.

HBP trailer and something happy

omgomgomgomgomg!!!!! This looks good! It has the right look and feel and creepiness, and there's no sign of romantic comedy in sight ... dare I hope ...?

And did anybody else snicker just a bit when Tom said, "You're the Doctor, aren't you?"

OK, that wasn't the reason I decided to write a second post today. I was going to share a happy little moment since my previous post was all grumpy. This is something good. Well, it started out not so good -- my paycheque never arrived this month, and I had my boss re-send it because we thought it was lost in the mail. But the good part is that I just got a call from someone at a restaurant on Elgin, just one street over from where I live. It was accidentally delivered to them (thanks CanadaPost) and he saw it was a cheque, looked up my phone number, and called to let me know. I was so surprised that I hardly even thanked him, but after I hung up I realised what a nice thing it was to do. So I wanted to share it with somebody, even if I forgot to tell him.

Oh, and because [info]paraka did it, and I'm really curious, Who comments the most on this journal? )

And I hope you all know that I love each and every one of you beyond belief!

Headed out!

I'm leaving at 5 for the airport tomorrow morning, and I really planned to be in bed by now, but I started watching the most amazing This American Life, "Escape," about a man named Mike Phillips who's lived his whole life with spinal muscular atrophy—the story is about how he's seeking independence from his mother. Remarkable and inspiring. And my love for Johnny Depp escalated because, when asked whose voice he wished he had, Mike said Johnny Depp or Edward Norton because "they're badasses." And then they got Johnny to narrate the show, reading from Mike's blog. Very cool.

But now, it's time for bed. I'll be back this weekend—be good!

This made me go "Awwww"

Thanks to last Thursday's ruling in the Cali Supreme Court, George Takei and his manager, Brad Altman, are getting married.

"He is my love and I can't imagine life without him. Now, we can have the dignity, as well as all the responsibilities, of marriage. We embrace it all heartily."

Happy Tuesday news

To quote [info]sarcastic_jo:

Steven Moffat to be Doctor Who Lead Writer and Executive Producer

Steven Moffat says: "My entire career has been a Secret Plan to get this job. I applied before but I got knocked back 'cos the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven.

"Anyway, I'm glad the BBC has finally seen the light, and it's a huge honour to be following Russell into the best - and the toughest - job in television. I say toughest 'cos Russell's at my window right now, pointing and laughing."
