It's Talk Like a Pirate Day.

But since I suck at languages of all sorts, instead have an episode of Warrior Women featuring Lucy Lawless' accent and Granuaile, Ireland's pirate queen.

Happy holidays everybody!

I'll be offline for the next few weeks and I'm going to miss you all! I hope each and every one of you have a warm, safe, chocolate-filled holiday, and a very happy new year. See you in 2012!!

Dec. 24th, 2010

To my lovely flist...

Welcome, Christmas, bring your cheer. Cheer to all Whos far and near. Christmas Day is in our grasp so long as we have hands to clasp. Christmas Day will always be just as long as we have we. Welcome Christmas while we stand, heart to heart and hand in hand.

Dec. 31st, 2009

So some of you have already arrived in 2010 - CONGRATS!! What's it like? Did you get your rocket cars yet? And your vacation homes on Mars? I expect no less!

For those of us still oozing towards the new year, I hope you have fabulous celebrations and robot maids to sweep up the confetti afterward. Happy New Year, everybody!

Dec. 25th, 2009

A very happy holiday to you all!

Hope you're all eating obscene amounts, drinking way more than is good for you, and sitting stunned surrounded by piles of torn paper and undone ribbons -- all the signs of a good Christmas!

Happy Halloween

Last night's party was a big success -- those folks are hardcore with the decorations. (I loved Hands of Blue in the vodka punch.) Even Zombie Beaver was representing. I was really pleased with how my Nina costume turned out (pics here) and I loved that I was recognised. (Yay for indoctrinating all my friends!)

To everybody else celebrating tonight, here's the cutest Halloween trio ever:

I miss these guys -- can't wait for the second series. (And just saw this awful news via [info]randombastery: Do.Not.Want. Come up with your own ideas, Hollywood, and keep your grubby hands off the shows I love!)

Now to wander through some of my tabs here -- I think I've got nearly 100 open. Expect comments of randomness for as long as my whiskey lasts!

A very happy hallow's eve to you all!!

It's that most miserable time of the year

That's right, time to dust off the laptop and pretend I remember how to write. No, not NaNoWriMo, I'm not that insane. Luckily [info] wrisomifu is gearing up for another round of miserable fuckitude. If you'd like to join in ten minutes of grumbling over how hard it is to write, go here and sign yourself up. The community's open until midnight on October 31st in some timezone that I'm not sure of, and sorry for the late notice but that's how life is these days.

Now off to finish my Halloween costume for tonight's party. Which you can see modelled here:

Canada Day post-mortem

OMG what a busy day! I wish I'd remembered to tell my American clients I wasn't working today--by the time I thought of it, I already had a full plate, so I just plowed on through.

Things that made me go "huh": the plural of gallows is gallowses. And gallow is a completely different word that means "to terrify." Huh.

I also found that Kingdom affects me faster than valium. It's Stephen Fry dealing with quirky neighbours in their quaint seaside village and making Everything.Work.Out. I know it's completely fanciful and terribly unrealistic, and its homespun wisdom really should annoy me, but for some reason it just soothes my soul.

Which I need at the moment because there are two lonely trombone players wandering around (drunk, I would guess) on the street below. I guess they got separated from the rest of the band on Parliament Hill? I don't know, I have no idea what to do with them, but they seem lost and keep wandering up and down the block.

But the fireworks were gorgeous!

Bathtubs, generation gaps, and a year of writing

The Bathtub Gang met yesterday for another all-day soak: a marathon viewing of the original Queer As Folk, followed by chatting and squeeing and general loveliness. What a great way to spend the holiday!

Of course, the fun we had was inversely proportional to the agony of trying to explain to my father how I'd spent my day yesterday. "See, we have a chatroom..." "A what?" "And I'm there with people from New Zealand and Georgia and Illinois..." "And they come up to Canada?" "No, Dad, it's online." "Over the phone?" *headdesks* I quickly gave up and we reverted to our standard talk of the weather. "Is there still snow up there?" "Yes, Dad, it's winter in Canada, there's still snow..."

That writing meme
I was so jealous of the people who'd written enough last year to warrant doing this meme. I'd written about two stories then, didn't seem much point.

Dec. 25th, 2008

So, 2008...

The year-end meme's going around again. I did it in 2006 and 2007 (just for my reference, so I don't have to go hunting for them again!) so in keeping with tradition:

My white trash roots are showing

A Charlie Brown Ad Agency

This was a hilarious reminder of why I no longer work in advertising.

Plans for the next few days:
1. Finish up work for my last SEVEN clients.
2. Curl up in bed with animals, laptop, The Lion In Winter, and AWZ.
3. Gorge self on Tim Tams and Jaffa Cakes (thanks to my beauties [info]aldiara and [info]goddessriss).

Dear Brain:

When you're this zonked, why do you insist on fiddling with IJ layouts? Now you've gone and disappeared my tag list and you're in no shape to tackle theme layers tonight. Just go to sleep already!

No love,

Solstice Greetings

I've looked far and wide for a solstice picture, but couldn't find one that I like as much as Hadley Hooper's print that I used last year. So you're getting it again, with the warmest wishes for the changing season.

The holiday season is chugging relentlessly by. I don't celebrate myself (although I do gratefully take off Xmas day) but I do see all my friends, online and off, work themselves into a frenzy. I hope that amidst all the craziness you can find yourself some peace (or more of the frenzy, if that's what rocks your boat).

Canadian thanksgiving

In honour of this day, here are Maple Syrup & Poutine's 100 Canadian Foods to Consume, ganked from LJ's seanchaidh.

A very Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who are celebrating it!

Halloween projects

Someone on my flist (please forgive my flu-addled brain but I can't remember who it was) posted some awesome pumpkin carving templates for Torchwood and Doctor Who fans. Now we've got Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer! If anybody tries this, I want pictures!!!

There are lots more there too, for BSG and SPN and all the other series with three-letter acronyms (AKA TLAs).

It's not a full moon, but boy, doesn't it feel like it?

Happy Lughnasa

(Colorbar by magic_art)

The coming of autumn's always been my favourite time of the year. It's a reminder to eek every last moment out of the summer.

And since Lughnasa's all about sharing blessings, here are some songs of the season:
Altan-Harvest Storm
Rufus Wainwright-Harvest (Neil Young)
Runrig-Harvest Moon

Also I would like to announce that, thanks to [info]omarandjohnny, I have a brand new crush: Matthew Goode. I'm not sure whether it's his voice or his facial expressions that make me tingle most, but I know the way he swallows at the very end is a thing of beauty.

Canada Day Picspam, Pt. 1

Happy Canada Day!

To celebrate our national holiday, I thought I'd treat you all to some of the natural beauty of our provinces. And, um, I might have got a little carried away. The result? Two photo-heavy posts of some of my favourite Canadians.

Behind door number one: Eastern Canada! )

Jun. 15th, 2008

I'm housesitting at the farm this weekend while the Ex is away. What a nice break from the city! I spent most of yesterday on the deck, reading and soaking up the sun; then I was out there again just now, until the storms rolled in. I had a good nap, which I really needed. My cat fights endlessly with his cat, and of course my cat feels threatened so she wants to be as close to me as she possibly can while they fight. All night long. I've started growling back at them, but it doesn't help.

Outside, though, it's so quiet! It makes me realise how accustomed I am to hearing cars and street cleaners and crazy drunken people yelling at each other. Here there's nothing but birds and the occasional bleat of a donkey or baaing lambs. I'm enjoying birdwatching, I've spotted bright yellow orioles and red-winged blackbirds and lots of doves. And there's a woodpecker somewhere—I keep hearing him but I haven't tracked him down yet.

But it looks like I'll be housebound the rest of the day. That's good, I'm behind on reading fic and I need to do some laundry and get packed for my trip to Chicago. I can't believe I'm leaving early Tuesday morning—where did this spring go?

New fic announcement before I get to work: I just posted my [info]malfoycest_day entry (how bad is it that I only remembered Father's Day because of [info]malfoycest_day?). My story is Love and Monsters and it seems very ... different than the other stories in the fest. But my prompt was what Harry would do when he discovered Lucius and Draco together, and the only thing I could imagine was pretty dark. So I posted it with some trepidation.

The sky's a crazy shade of grey-blue now. And here comes the thunder!!!
