Fandom rocks

Sometimes I forget just how bloody incredible fandom can be. It takes a reminder like this to see how this community, which is so diverse and so disparate, needs to be celebrated, for WE ARE AWESOME.

FIC: The Lonely Rentboy

Title: The Lonely Rentboy
Author: [info]lilithilien
Fandom/Characters: OC (or are they?)
Word Count: ~1000 words
Rating: Gen with metaphors
Summary: How a sad lonely rentboy found true love, fame, and fortune. (Alternative summary: This is not the fairy tale I should be writing.)
Disclaimer: This is a true story.
A/N: Because I don’t have it in me to write porn for National Porn Sunday, have a cracky fairy tale instead. This will make no sense at all unless you are a Tweetskimo. I blame them.

Feb. 5th, 2011

The lovely [info]torino10154 pointed out that tomorrow is National Porn Sunday. Which is, of course, as good a reason for an impromptu porn fest as any!

Pimping myself

I'm pimping myself out for help_pakistan.

I'm offering up beta services. I'm most comfy reading Merlin, HP, AWZ, SGA, and Torchwood/Doctor Who verse, but I can do others if you're comfy with your own canon knowledge. Slash, het, gen, bring it! I specified a 20K word fic by October 1st, but I'm happy to do longer fics if your deadline's later.

And while I'm pimping, here are some things that some of my dear Ottawa Slashers are offering:

[info]paraka is offering podfic and mail.

[info]kronos999 is offering book binding services to keep your fanfics looking gorgeous.

[info]seanchaidh is offering fic.

[info]sarcasticjo is putting up some of her knitting and she does gorgeous stuff. I want that shawl myself.......

The master list of offerings is here (also on Delicious).

Bidding open NOW through August 28th @11:59 EST.

Weekend update

I hope you're all having a lovely weekend. Mine's been pretty fab. I had a great dinner and lots of good conversation last night with [info]deakat and [info]paraka. I really love being around people who live fandom, who are always thinking about how it works and how to make it grow -- not just the followers of a particular show or a genre, but the fandom world as a whole. I'd been debating writing something about what fandom means to me -- it's truly changed my life to find a community with so much talent given freely, motivated not by profit but (in the case of writers) by a real passion for storytelling, who create stuff at a level that often exceeds published writers, but who do it out of pure enjoyment and love. The whole topic has seemed such a daunting task, but after talking to [info]paraka last night those ideas are percolating. Even if I never write anything of it, helping make sense of it in my mind is a good thing, I think.

All that's been in light of EKP reaching SEVEN THOUSAND SUBSCRIBERS.

This is just an inconceivable number -- we're getting ever closer to filling the Ottawa Civic Centre! *cackles* Oh, how I would like to try that!

Now I'm getting ready to send off my latest writing and then do something fun like, oh, clip my cat's claws. I got my new futon cover (YAY!) and it looks AWESOME and I don't want it shredded like the last one was.

What an exciting life I lead.

A Bubble of Love: GOOL Trip Report

The weekend was fabulous, excruciating, brilliant, and exhausting. I wouldn't trade a minute of it. Okay, that's a lie, if you read my trip report you'll see quite a few minutes I'd trade. But even so, I cannot imagine a more incredible time!

Nov. 15th, 2009

a title? you want a title too?

I keep meaning to update, but my life seems to consist of:

* dragging myself from bed to the coffee machine
* staring dully at work for a few hours
* falling deeper in love with AWZ (is that even possible?)
* cursing the technical difficulties that complicate sharing of said soap
* crawling into bed feeling like I'm behind on life
* rinse and repeat

I wonder if writing EKP descriptions and commenting on vids counts for WriSoMiFu. Because I'm writing fuck all else these days. The month's half gone and plot bunnies are happily breeding, but actually sitting down and harnessing them? Writing, why so hard?

What's keeping me going is discovering just how AMAZING some people are! Get this: When the backdoor we were using to snag our video files from RTL was closed, some fabulous souls stepped in, including one woman in Slovenia who spent her entire weekend figuring out a different way for us to grab them. I'm just overwhelmed by the thought that somebody would do that for people they don't even know. Not only that, but we had other people--in Russia, in the U.S., in France--all offering what help they could.

Fandom, you seriously rock my world!!!

Of course, now that we've got this new method, I'm obsessed with going back and redoing the poor quality vids we posted for a week. If I don't, that will haunt me forever. Just like ep302 still does after nearly a year...

The best thing I did this week was entice the lovely [info - personal] aldiara into marathoning the most recent EKP playlist with me. Soaking in the bubbles. )

OK, enough blather about AWZ. There are other things on TV, yes there are! Like Merlin, which if you block out the first four episodes and say this season started with #5, is having a pretty kick-ass year! And that messy ending, YUMMMM! Like Misfits, the most wonderfully warped superhero series imaginable. Like my beloved Beautiful People just starting its second season, and I've just got my hot little hands on a copy. Simon, I've missed you!!!!

And there is real life as well, much as I want to avoid it. I'm off to Montréal in the morning. Grrrr. Normally I'd be all over a trip there, but going to hear a bunch of MBAs rattle on? Shoot me now.

But I probably should pack at some point.

And stop being curmudgeonly, yes.

New AWZ fic and fandom fun

Upon hearing about my soap's asinine rentboy plot...
Lilith: I have this furious Roman muse in my head right now.
Normal people: Um, okay... *backs away slowly*
Aldi: Oh really? *makes grabby hands*

And so the idea for this collaborative fic was born -- several weeks ago (and damn work anyway), so it's AU and been jossed by this point, but we don't care. When canon gives you lemons, you ... write epic multi-chaptered hatesex fic, right?

Title: In This Home On Ice – Chapter One: Face-Off
Authors: [info]aldiara and [info]lilithilien
Fandom/Characters: Alles Was Zählt, Deniz/Roman
Word Count/Rating: 10K words of NC-17 smut
Summary: “I'm curious: is a professional blow job really that much better than what I used to get for free?”
Disclaimer: Sadly we don't own these characters; we just like watching them fight.
A/N: While this story picks up Deniz’s rentboy plot somewhere after episode 565, it goes AU from there (a.k.a. as far as we are concerned, Stella does not and will never exist). Lilith pirouettes; Aldi swings hockey sticks.

Fandom squeee

Actually, read the original. Because, yes.

I'm still overflowing with fandom love for the Eskimo Kiss Project. And in the few days since I last squeeed about it -- I'm sure you missed that, didn't you? -- we posted two landmark videos. I've embedded them here because you've got to see the pretty.

Happy {Hallow's Eve}{Samhain}{Reformation Day}{pre-Dia de los Muertos}{Friday}!!

Here's why I love fandom: when life gives you craptastic costumes (yes, we're looking at you, Cissy), fandom makes crackfic and furniture porn. What would I do without you people?

Now I'm off to make cream of leek soup for Seanchaidh's Torchwood extravaganza tomorrow. I was going to make a dessert too, but decided on toffee scones from the bakery. That's sorta Welsh, eh? (I just offended any Welsh folks on my flist, didn't I?)

And I'm craving chili dogs. Why?!!

Anyway, have some gorgeous John Sheppard to perk up your day. Stubble=special tingle. ;)

FanHistory creeps me out

I was heading to bed and then I saw this. And then I looked up Astolat's FanHistory page and felt more than a little sick. I don't even want to think about what it'd be like if my fandom activities were "outed" to certain people (my boss in particular). I just know it would not be good. I'm not in any danger of being added to fanhistory, thank goodness. But I'm just completely gobsmacked that someone thinks it's okay -- legalities aside, I'm just talking about ethics of propriety here -- to post personal information like that against someone's will.

There. I had to vent about something today.

ETA: Adding this post from the FanHistory mod, basically saying we're all fair game. Nice. That was deleted. Read what Astolat says instead. It's much better for the soul.

Trianne, your prayers might've been answered

Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease let this be true!

And to counter that very cool news, check out the lamest trailer EVER. Come on, can't you guys give us more than Mumbledore?

I took some time to play around with my fic journal layout. If you have a sec, can you take a look? One big change is that I set it to show just one page at a time, which is people use the index should work just fine -- it will take them to the first posted entry for each fic. But it does make it difficult to freely browse. How do you prefer to explore someone's fic journal? Do you like the ease of scrolling through?

Finally, if you are heading to Comic Con, please read this. Make fandom count, people. And if you manage to abduct Gareth David Lloyd, email me and I'll be on the first flight down. I have duct tape.

As of 8 minutes ago, it's officially been the weekend. As of 4 minutes ago, I've been sucking down wine. There may be drunken posts later.

A moment's peace

This week's almost over, and I say goodbye and good riddance. But wow, has it ever been a reminder of how much I need/love/want you guys. You've kept me sane and that's been no mean feat.

Special most wonderful thanks are due to the amazing [info]angela_snape who totally made my day with Work Woes (a drabble for me!!!) and to my darling [info]sdk without whom I would have been left un-Horribled. YOU GUYS ROCK!

I'm having a breather tonight before the last gasp of hell week. Searching through some vids I found this stunning piece of work: In Exchange for Your Tomorrows by Lim. You Snape fans will have seen it, I'm sure. I only discovered it because I'm in love with her SGA video, This Is How It Works, and you know how those google-trails go. Anyway, if you've never seen it (or if you need a refresher) check it out and be amazed. To me, it seems to distil the magic of the wizarding world into its purest form.

And you know, it seems like a good time for more Porny Snippets(TM). 45 days until Bring Back The Porn!! Which means that 320 days ago, [info]xie_xie_xie posted a sizzling hot story called "TLC". How can you go wrong with a story that starts out with...click for teh pr0n. )

Too late for second guessing

So that little drabble inspired by this picture exploded into full-blown fic...

Title: Stoic
Author: Lilith
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Summary: Never, ever, admit that it hurts.
A/N: 700 words, rated PG for language, beta-ed by [info]sarcastic_jo (who was denied mpreg, sorry).

In the real-life, grown-up world that I prefer to avoid, I'm feeling a bit maudlin. It's been a frustrating money day. I put most of my savings into a money market account at the end of March, and three months later $700+ is gone. Poof! Yes, I know, this happens, and it might come back. But it's really hard to think about that much money as an abstraction, and I'm fighting the urge to withdraw the little bit that's still in there and hide it in my mattress.

On the other hand, I keep reminding myself that I have a nice apartment in a place that I love, I've got more than enough to eat (*pets the belleh*), and I'm not extravagant but I can afford a few luxuries. I'm not hurting, and I'm aware of what a privilege that is. I know that many aren't nearly as lucky.

I'm also very thankful that I can escape into fandom so easily. Reading and discussing fics with other passionate people is bringing me a lot of joy these days, as is sharing the squee over silly things and seeing all the creativity being poured out all over my flist. It's inspiring, truly.

Speaking of squee, some new promo shots have appeared, ranging from the ridiculous (SGA) to the sublime (HBP). In spite of myself, I'm getting excited about HBP. Cynicism quails and flees in the face of high-res Draco.

And if you haven't yet, go tell [info]ponderosa121 just how damn talented she is. I haven't seen anything this lickable in ages!

I take that back. Cillian on an Irish stamp is more lickable. (Colm Meaney gets a stamp too, if anyone wants to lick Chief O'Brien!)

There, see, I'm in a better mood already. Happy 4th of July to those who celebrate it ... Happy Doctor Who-eve to those who celebrate that ... and Happy Friday to everyone else!

Fly-by post

Ooh, I like the new posting format. Shiny!

Finally wrestled my [info]ides_of_march fic to the ground and made it cry "Uncle." This was one of the most difficult pieces I've written and I've been worried about getting it in on time. It's a different style than I'm used to, which was good practice in itself, but that was compounded by the fact that it's from Draco's POV. I have newfound respect for people who can nail that! I find it much easier to write a Harry who is uncertain about Draco's motives -- I wonder if that's because all we get in canon is a shell of this character. When I started digging into there ... phew!

Speaking of Draco ... I feel awful that I'm just now getting around to thanking her, but [info]twilightsorcery gave me a gorgeous drawble for my birthday. I love the expression, he looks like something dark is going on there. Thank you so much, darling!

I'm sure y'all are tired of the weather updates, but it snowed again today. I'm betting this puts us over 14 feet for the year. The snow removal trucks have slowly made their way through, though, and the strip between the sidewalk and the street (what's that called) is clear now. Unfortunately I saw quite a few mangled bikes attached to fences, but I guess if you leave your bike to be covered in snow you don't care too much, right?

But Jackie shared the secret to the perfect winter meal. Take a good handful of tiny potatoes (they call them "potato gems" here, they come in all colours; the larger ones I cut in half), throw them in a baking pan with a generous helping of olive oil, and bake uncovered at 450 degrees for 40 minutes. They come out crispy on the outside and fluffy inside; eat with ketchup mixed with a hearty dash of Thai chili sauce. Have a Guinness while you're at it. Hey, I never said it was healthy, but it's wonderfully filling.

For lack of a segue ... LJ, it amuses me: Best comment ever on the account changes.

And now I'm wondering if the new IJ updates allow embedding. Here's a good one to test:

ETA: Woot! It works!

Fanfic, the WGA, and the OTW: A Good Thing

I finished the penultimate chapter of Architects of Memory tonight. I can't believe it's almost over. This story has consumed six months of my life!

After posting my baby, I indulged in some mindless admin tasks, namely moving my fics posted at LJ over here. And I have a question. I've forgotten my fic journal password, and the email I used is long gone. Which means I have no way to do anything to the journal. Is there any way to back up a journal with comments without a password? I don't want to lose any of my pretty comments.

In the midst of all that mundane cutting and pasting, I started thinking about my fandom life. I posted my first fic on LJ nearly four years ago. But the story actually begins earlier... )

Dec. 1st, 2007

I posted Chapter Eleven of Architects of Memory today. It's building up to the climax; since a couple of people have asked, I expect to write another 4 chapters and hope to have it finished by the end of the year. That would make me very happy. Although with the holidays and a visit to Miami next weekend (yay!), I can't guarantee anything.

In this chapter I discovered, as always, that I most enjoy writing minor characters -- in this case Millicent Bulstrode. I kinda regret missing that 20 Random Facts challenge. I hope I can catch it next time around.

I also posted the update over at Skyehawke; afterwards, I clicked on another story that was just posted: This Side of Never by Ravengirl. Do you ever feel like your heart's breaking when you read a story that's exactly the way you long to write, but know you never will? Where the words cut you to the bone, and the characters are exactly like the ones that haunt your dreams? That's how I felt reading this story. It's so good, go read it now! (Harry/Draco of course, intensely gorgeous smut, post-Hogwarts.)

[info]phoenix_flies is having another friending frenzy, which is where I met about half of my lovely f-list last time. So if you're new, then welcome! And if you've hung around this long, well... *squishes tight*

I'm feeling immensely better today. I woke up yesterday with a bad case of labyrinthitis -- I hadn't even sat up and the room was already spinning. It was exactly like the throes of a mad drinking spree, only I hadn't had a drink in days. I couldn't even see what time it was because the numbers on the clock were wiggling too much. So I took a sick day yesterday, and a kinda sick day today, and now that it's 10pm I'm finally feeling myself again. Time to get this weekend started!

Oct. 21st, 2007

I can't believe I'm glad the weekend's over!

Hope it's been a good weekend for everybody. Mine was kinda rough. It started off on a very high note with yet another viewing of SGA's "Doppelganger", which aside from some really odd OOC moments (since when does Rodney fear whales?) is quite possibly my favourite episode of the entire series. And that's saying a lot. Of course there are only the two of them in Shepherd's dream ... as if we didn't already know that.

Then yesterday was all aflutter with the news from JKR that Dumbles is a Big Gay Wizard. Well, duh. )

Sorry for the rant there. I have lots more to say about more of the ludicrous things she "revealed" in that interview (if you're interested, here's a transcription: Part 1 and Part 2) but I'll spare you. All I can say is I'll have what she's having.

Now, when I tell you that I've immersing myself in fandom to avoid the RL craziness that is my family, you'll understand just how bad things really are. :(

Finally, at 11:00 p.m. I'm starting to unwind. This picture helped immensely:

from LJ's verav

And I posted Chapter Six of Architects of Memory, right on schedule. Not sure if I can keep up this pace, work's picking up drastically, but I'll do my best.

Now it's time to sink into Farscape and knitting, and brace myself for Monday.

Bring Back the Porn

My f-list is overflowing with porn!

And, once again, I am absolutely floored by fandom. This was just an idea that [info]florida_minxie threw out on her journal, and people took it and fucking ran with it! You guys, you just rock, you know that?

Here are my contributions to the cause:

Fair Play (Harry Potter): Harry and Draco take a break. With porn, of course. (NC-17, 665 words of total PWP.)

Attention (Stargate Atlantis): A McShep drabble dedicated to [info]seleneheart, who shared one of Einstein's best observations: "Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves." (R rated)

And over at [info]nsfw_icons I posted a few naked men bases, most from the French Rugby Calendar. I am so not an icon maker, but the world can never have enough pictures of naked sweaty men, right?

Now that I've got my contributions posted, I get to spend the rest of the day wallowing in porn. What a beautiful day!
