This is my brain ATM

Time for a disjointed post, facilitated through interpretative dance. Um, I mean bulletpoints. Divided into thematic divisions, of course, because I desperately need to control some part of my life.

Merlin )
Other )

There were other bits and bobs I wanted to include in random post of randomness but the sticky notes have fallen off my brain and gotten lost in the clutter of obscure trivia and strings of miscellaneous foreign words. Gone forever.

Hope you're all enjoying your weekends!

A very disjointed post

The muse appeared long enough for me to write a drabble for [info]draco100: Potency. Then he promptly buggered off again. Summer's finally arrived in Ottawa—yesterday and today have been gorgeous and warm—so I expect he's out playing. I couldn't take advantage of it yesterday (work has been beyond insane) but this morning I went for a long walk. (I stopped by your store, [info]takhys, for the dvd—thanks!!—and might have picked up a few batik sundresses on sale...)

And now I'm getting the urge to do some spring cleaning. A few months late, I know. So my question is: should I act like a grown up and spend money to turn my tiny apartment into a more efficient living space, or should I continue to live like a student 20 years out, with my clothes in plastic drawers and milk crates? They've served me well, these dear old milk crates, but shouldn't there come a time in your life when your furnishings aren't pillaged from behind the grocery store?

(This existential angst is brought to you by Ikea's nifty wardrobe planner. Evil, evil Flash temptress!)

Fandom is keeping me on my toes lately. [info]sarcastic_jo got me hooked on Burn Notice—Bruce Campbell is irresistible, of course, and it's got interesting, twisty plots ... although I am rather tired of the endless stream of evil foreigners.

Then Eureka went and ripped my heart out ... does anybody else watch that show? I had only just started to recover from it when I heard about Atlantis ... *sigh* Gotta hand it to the SGA overlords—they're a lot smarter than they look. Hot on the heels of their asinine decision to cancel a successful show so they can work on its untried spin-off, they air "The Shrine," a fangirl's dream come true. With the massive quantities of McShep they handed us, it's awfully hard to stay mad at them. Although the thought of not getting my weekly David Hewlett fix makes me very sad. I swear, that man is an insanely good actor.

And then there's the real world, where another Russian blogger is being prosecuted for "inciting social discord" on his LJ. He's facing 2 years imprisonment. *flails* I know that bloggers can't avoid prosecution for breaking local laws, but wouldn't they have had more protection/security (f-locked journals, for instance) before the sale to SUP?

FinallyI see that Biden's been picked as Obama's VP nom. Not sure if it's the best choice campaign-wise—Biden's got some baggage they'll have to deal with—but I do think he would make an excellent VP. He and Obama are both intelligent and I think will balance well. It's been far too long since someone like that has occupied the White House!

Reminds me—I must see if my absentee voter reg is all up to date. *makes note to do*

It's taken over a year but...

LJ's new policy sounds ... good.

We have also stated within the policy that non-graphic, non-sexualized nudity is not considered explicit adult content. This includes things such as an image of a mother breastfeeding their child, or a non-sexualized work of art such as the Statue of David. We have also extended this to our policy on default userpics; non-graphic, non-sexualized nudity is no longer considered a violation of our default userpic policy.

Our policy on Non-Photographic Images of Minors is being removed. What this means is that we will no longer be requiring the removal of this content, or suspending people who have posted it. We feel that with the introduction of the adult content flagging system, we do not need to take any further action on this type of material.

As one of the early commenters said, "Who are you, and what did you do with the LJ staff? Really, I had to double check it wasn't still 1 April."

ETA: And then LJ went boom. Oh well, means I can write, right?

Migrating and squees

A few people who just ventured over from LJ have mentioned that it's quieter over here. That made me smile. It was really quiet when I first got here too. Over the months, that's slowly changed. My flist isn't quite as big as it was at LJ, but they're definitely more talkative -- thank goodness I had yesterday off, since I spent practically the whole day responding to comments!

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't give up. Community doesn't happen overnight. When you first joined LJ it probably didn't think feel very active either -- I know it took me a while to make the right connections. But I think you'll get out of it what you put in. And there's a chance to build something new here, which has been really enjoyable.

I don't have a clue whether the strike had any effect, but the hostility surrounding it has really turned me off LJ. Whatever. I'm finding myself not caring too much. I'm discovering that the less time I spend over there, the less stressful my life is, and I like that. And I can follow LJ's cock-ups with amusement instead of feeling like my online world's being threatened. (Speaking of, [info]strangemuses has a hilarious recap of the latest. I almost feel sorry for LJ. Almost.)

But now, back to what we're here for -- SQUEE! Loved loved LOVED last night's episode of Torchwood. Spoilers? )

It's a gorgeous day out today -- sunny and only -2, which is a welcome change. I really should go out for a bit instead of watching yet another episode of Hustle...

We're idiots now, according to LJ/SUP

Apologies for going a bit post-happy today (makes up for the weeks away, I suppose) but I can't pass this up. Anton Nosik heads up SUP's blog division, and he was interviewed in a Russian magazine; here's the translation:

Did he really just say that?

I'm honestly not that surprised, however. This has been coming for a while. What kind of customer service do you expect from SUP, when they think the idea that customers would call and complain about anything is ... well, as he puts it, idiotic.

And unfortunately, Mr. Nosik's strategy is probably right, as we've seen from past experience. There'll be some wank that LJ will ignore (just like they stalled on policy clarifications for months and months), all the LJ apologists will traipse out saying that IJ's not the solution because they don't like the colour scheme and/or name, and then before too long everybody will go back to their sleepy sheep state. It's maddening!

Or it would be, if I didn't love the new home I've got here. Ten months here, and it's been completely wank-free!

I do wish more of my friends (esp those outside the HP fandom who still cling to LJ) would come over, though.

ETA: This comment thread on the LJ news post (now maxxed out) is fascinating. It's a dialogue with a Russian who has some very interesting opinions about Nosik here -- his background, ideas about business, and what I found really insightful, how he takes intonations and "leering" to a high art.

ETA again: Furiosity provides her translation of Nosik's interview. Less inflammatory, to be sure, but I don't think the basic contempt for criticism has changed.

And [info]xie_xie_xie has a wonderful analysis of the whole situation, and just why it's different here than at LJ. [info]squeaky even responds. And if that doesn't tell you something about IJ, then I honestly don't know what will.

ETA yet again: This time Nossik responds. I still don't like what he's saying ("freeloaders"?) but I do have to admit my prejudice -- he sounds like my boarish Ukranian in-laws.

Fly-by post

Ooh, I like the new posting format. Shiny!

Finally wrestled my [info]ides_of_march fic to the ground and made it cry "Uncle." This was one of the most difficult pieces I've written and I've been worried about getting it in on time. It's a different style than I'm used to, which was good practice in itself, but that was compounded by the fact that it's from Draco's POV. I have newfound respect for people who can nail that! I find it much easier to write a Harry who is uncertain about Draco's motives -- I wonder if that's because all we get in canon is a shell of this character. When I started digging into there ... phew!

Speaking of Draco ... I feel awful that I'm just now getting around to thanking her, but [info]twilightsorcery gave me a gorgeous drawble for my birthday. I love the expression, he looks like something dark is going on there. Thank you so much, darling!

I'm sure y'all are tired of the weather updates, but it snowed again today. I'm betting this puts us over 14 feet for the year. The snow removal trucks have slowly made their way through, though, and the strip between the sidewalk and the street (what's that called) is clear now. Unfortunately I saw quite a few mangled bikes attached to fences, but I guess if you leave your bike to be covered in snow you don't care too much, right?

But Jackie shared the secret to the perfect winter meal. Take a good handful of tiny potatoes (they call them "potato gems" here, they come in all colours; the larger ones I cut in half), throw them in a baking pan with a generous helping of olive oil, and bake uncovered at 450 degrees for 40 minutes. They come out crispy on the outside and fluffy inside; eat with ketchup mixed with a hearty dash of Thai chili sauce. Have a Guinness while you're at it. Hey, I never said it was healthy, but it's wonderfully filling.

For lack of a segue ... LJ, it amuses me: Best comment ever on the account changes.

And now I'm wondering if the new IJ updates allow embedding. Here's a good one to test:

ETA: Woot! It works!

Another thrilling Friday night

I'm feeling a bit under the weather today (and there's a lot of weather to be under today, ForecastFox says "blowy snow"), but I wanted to share a couple of goodies:

WGA Strike: A slash love story. Really, you just don't screw with people who are this creative. (Ganked from [info]boji.)

Free Rice: Build your vocab and contribute rice to the UN. (Ganked from [info]seleneheart.)

I'm trying to stay up long enough to watch SGA tonight. Looks like a good one, but bed's sounding really nice.

ETA: Yet another gem from lj_biz in their attempt to clarify their ridiculous new "feature":

Definition of Adult Concepts: The Adult Concepts setting is only a voluntary setting - it's not an option to flag and there's no administrative setting for it. The definition of that content is completely up to the author of the content.

Very random ramblings

I just slogged through the snowy night to see Control and OMG am I ever glad I did. (Although next time I'll take a tip from J and bring my pocket rye, her walk home was much warmer than mine!) Gushing follows. )

In very unrelated music news, [info]sarcastic_jo sent me this clip yesterday. This is Noah Gray-Cabey, who plays Micah on Heroes, and just happens to be a musical prodigy. He started playing at three just from watching others play -- he can't read music at all, he mimics their movements. About two minutes in you can see him perform with the New England Philharmonic -- he's just dwarfed by that big ol' piano!

Oh, and great, I come back home to find LJ being stupid again. I know, I know, what else is new? *hugs all my nice sane IJ comrades*

Well, I bought a wine vacuum pump today. I think it's time to give it a test drive.

Some LJ crap and TV goodness

If you're still reading your flist over at LJ, you'll want to disable Snap.com unless you want all your links to have those obnoxious little pop-up windows. And if you want good karma, disable the damn things on your journal. More info here.

LJ news aside, I'm in seventh heaven at the moment -- I'm watching the BBC4's special on Tony Wilson, narrated by John Simm. John Simm. Talking about punk music. Talking about some of my favourite bands in the world. (Though now they're veering into the Happy Mondays years, and my belief that they were a complete waste of space hasn't diminished one bit.) Heh. John just said the new Hacienda luxury condos are "a capitalist hijack of Factory's utopian dream," and the scorn in his voice made me hot.

And not sick any more! Hoorah!

Aug. 30th, 2007

LJ asshattery

LJ got slash-dotted for its policy of forever holding users responsible for links: "One wonders how such a long-established blogging company can be so ignorant about the nature of the world wide web."

The comments are amusing me.

Saturday ramblings

I've just got a few things on my mind this morning. First, and most important ...

[info]florida_minxie is pimping an idea that's well overdue. In all the panic and politics, we've been neglecting a very important thing: porn!

Your Mission is...

(1) Pimp this in your journal
(2) Write or Draw fandom smut
(3) Post on September 01
(4) Comment, Comment, Comment

So spread the word, peeps!

Awesome SGA video
This is completely over-the-top wonderful fun, with slow-mo and sparkles and Jefferson Airplane. Thanks to [info]mirabile_dictu for the link.

HP rec of the day
Harry Potter and the Inconvenient Condition by Mirabella: This story was pure sexy fun. Harry's a vampire and Malfoy's got a blood kink. Hermione tries her damnedest to keep them apart, but Ron knows to just give up and enjoy the show. Read it!

Daily LJ rant; or How Your Mar-Com Can Be Even Worse Than LiveJournal's
Uber-peppy cheerleader PepsiBetty says "...be sure to check out Black in Style. If you're tired of those boring Black History Month things, this is a TOTALLY cool new way to view black people! In their totally awesome clothes! It's such a beautiful day, we're going to watch the guys play football!" and then bemoans the fact that her f-list only has two friends.

One of her "friends" is the even more obnoxious PepsiBrian who says "One of my boys passed me an icy bottle of Pepsi Max. I yelled, 'what's this shit!?' and he said, 'just try it, bro.' I was like, 'no, dude. This has ginsing and I ain't one of those new age fags,' but I took a sip and DAMN this shits good!" and then "so like I was sitting with my bros after Football Strategy class, drinking Pepsi MAX, when this one wigger walks by and knocks it over with his $400 pair of Nikes. He then bitches me out because it got on his shoes and I was like 'hell no!' so I picked up the half empty bottle and crammed it down his motherfucking throat. He was all fight until the Pepsi MAX hit his taste buds, and he was like 'damn, bro! This is good shit!' And all was cool." And then he rants about hating Asians for awhile.

This is a marketing campaign? How in the world could someone think this would make a person buy Pepsi? Granted, I'm not their chosen demographic -- they're obviously targeting assholes with shoe sizes larger than their IQs -- but to think they had a marketing team put together something like this? I'm completely baffled.

eta: Some people have suggested that these might be spoof journals. Could be ... what do you guys think?

Saturday plans?
Well, first I have to track down a funny smell in my apartment (o_O) and then it's off to see Stardust. I'll be back to review later today.

Enjoy the weekend!'

Aug. 17th, 2007

OK, I'm now convinced that LJ has a curse on it just like Hogwarts' DADA position. Because nobody could really be this stupid, could they?

If anybody sends me an ad for that aspartame-loaded bile they're off my f-list.

Aug. 15th, 2007

Trying to stay positive...

Damn. That Other Site’s stooped to lows that I can’t even comprehend. Nazi beheading videos = one strike, while fan art is still conflated with child porn and art is still being removed. WTF is wrong with this world?

*breathes deep*

Screw that. Here's some happy.

Note how Jack's struggling to keep a straight face as Ianto's fingers trail up the back of Jack's thigh, up the curve of his bum...

But what's happened to Gwen? She's gone gaunt! Girl needs to be having a few more dinners with Rhys, I think.

Oh hurry up with Season 2 already. I'm dying over here!

I also have to confess that I find this site immensely entertaining. Especially with posts like this and this. Pedantry, grammar, and pop-culture history -- what could be better?

By the way, I would just like to point out that I have the most beautiful mood theme ever. LJ's enriana made it from art by Kamil Vojnar, and every time I pick a new mood I'm awed by what I see. Now that's something happy to be sure.

Finally, the truth is revealed

If you're a fan of Good Omens, you've got to read this:

What Really Happened 2.0, or How Aziraphale Learned to Stop Worrying and Start Loving the Porn

IJ ups friends limit and nifty migration tool

Good news! InsaneJournal's just raised the limit on the number of friends you can have. Several folks said that they needed more than 100 friends, and now free users can have 250. Not to mention that Squeaky's said nothing short of a court order will make him close down fan journals. So come on over!

Here's another nifty migration tool -- this one supports communities! and there's a Mac method too. *eyes [info]melty_girl*

It also migrates the metadata (tags, music, etc.) that LJ-Sec loses. Still doesn't save memories, those have to be done manually.

(Later today I promise a post with no mention of LJ crappity crap.)

ETA: Go here to see why GreatestJournal's not a safe alternative.

IJ owner says advertisers will go before users. I love this man.

And response from LJ abuse says that LINKS to OFFSITE content will be subject to their same restrictions as if you post in your own journal. Further clarification has been sought, since this *would* violate LJ's TOS that says they aren't responsible for offsite content, but does anybody really expect them to be consistent?

Aug. 8th, 2007

The Commissar Vanishes

I didn't want to post any more about this mess today, really. I get depressed every time I think about it. I hate what LJ's become -- I don't want us falling over ourselves to report other groups, whether they're proanorexia or hate groups or whatever. I just want us all to get along.

But then I read this. It wasn't just Ponderosa's journal that was deleted from LJ. Her entire existence was wiped out. Every single comment that she's ever made, the little doodle of Murphy that she'd drawn as a comment to one of my posts...all gone. I'm so angry I don't know what to do. My journal was violated!

Fuck this. I don't think even reading porn can cheer me up now.

You've got to be shitting me

First Burr, now coffeechica.

Seriously. LJ/6A needs to gag their employees.

Semagic, fandom stuff, and a bit of Harry Potter

This is my first attempt to post to my three journal simultaneously. If you've got multiple journals too, I'm sure you can consider it spam. But this is all a learning curve so I hope we'll all be patient with each other while things settle out.

I did learn something unfortunate about RSS feeds. If you use these, be sure to give them a different name than what the journal you're feeding. If you don't, the feed captures that name on the new journal, and the original owner of the name can't use it if they later want to create their own journal. (Yes, I did this, and I'm trying to get it undone now, but haven't gotten any info back from the IJ support team. Hopefully they can fix it soon.)

I've been amusing myself today by trolling the LJ news pages, where protests are being lodged with graphic smut snippets and macros. It's a bizarrely satisfying world where you can go from steamy Dilios/Leonidas orgasms to a terrifying cat demanding "GIMME MAH PRONS BAK!"

I also saw this news, which could convert me into a devoted Dr. Who fanatic. Did anybody see Jekyll? Only some of the most twisted television I've ever had the privilege of viewing. If these two teamed up for Dr. Who it'd be spectacular! (I hear it's probably just a rumour, but I can still dream...)

Aug. 3rd, 2007

It's sad how sometimes people ignore something until it happens to someone they know. I know I do that. As angry as it made me to read about 6Apart/LiveJournal's suspensions, reinstatements, and then further suspensions, I just let it slide.

Until now. Until it happens to someone whose art and writings I've admired since the beginning of my time here on LiveJournal. I'm sure most everybody on my flist knows [info]ponderosa121*. One of the most talented artists in fandom whose love for her characters came through in everything she created. Remember Murphy and Conor on the steps? Or Sirius holding baby Harry at Christmastime? She even wrote a BDS story for me once; somehow it's fitting that LJ calls its features "memories", because that's left now.

I'm absolutely heartbroken that so much beauty is gone from this place.

* Note that there's no "strikethrough" anymore -- LJ doesn't want it to be easy to see who's been deleted anymore. Now it's just boldface type, guess we won't notice that way, eh?

More news here about LJ's stupidity here.

And Ponderosa's entry here (as well as the image that she got in trouble for ... which doesn't look that young to me!)

Anyway, I'm lilithilien at both InsaneJournal and GreatestJournal. I'm not sure where I'll end up more (I'll probably follow the masses) but I think it's pretty easy to feed any journal one journal into another (see the helpful instructions provided by [info]stewardess.

What a way to start a Friday.
