Such Promise Wasted: Watching Parade's End

The theme song of my weekend

Aug. 1st, 2012

I'm gonna get so lost!

I have to go to a volunteer orientation meeting tonight - blerch, can't we all just skype in from our couches? - so I looked up the bus instructions on the handy OC Transpo trip planner. It tells me to get off at a stop from where I'll still need to walk 12 minutes to reach my destination. When I clicked on the walking instructions (which are usually pretty helpful), it says...

Walking Information: Take TRANSITWAY and walk to TRANSITWAY, it is the next street. Turn left and walk to TRANSITWAY, it is the next street. Turn left and walk to TRANSIT, it is the next street. Take TRANSIT and walk to ROADWAY, it is the next street. Turn right and walk to WOODROFFE, it is the next street. Turn right and walk to [address], it is on the left (+/- 12 min.).

I'm sure this is one of those situations where it'll all be completely clear once I'm there, right?

Lunch and stuff

I just met my website designer/marketing dude for lunch. I always feel so upbeat after our meetings! I know that he's in marketing and it's not only his job but also his personality, but still... his enthusiasm about my business chances is contagious, and it makes me believe that going off on my own isn't such a crazy idea after all.

And he bought me lunch. WIN.

My rage, let me show you it

I've known for a very long time that the Youtube fandom, of which EskimoKissProject was necessarily a part, was plagued with a complete lack of etiquette. With EKP and also with the AWZ communities on IJ, we tried to bring what all three of us had been taught was normal fandom interaction to that world. I'm talking about the very basic niceties of fandom here - you know, the "credit others for their contributions" and "comment when you like something" and "for the love of god, don't steal other people's shit." I'm not saying we did a perfect job, but at least we tried. For Pete's sake, I even gave Dennis Grabosch an earful when he took somebody's fanvid and put his own music to it because he hates "My Immortal". I do too, btw, but that shit is just not on.

As we expected, the fandom really went rogue after we quit our regular posting last year. It's turned to ugly consumerism, where people just grab what they want without any concern for the time or effort that others took to make it. And I'm not even talking about EKP's subtitled videos, which people are uploading at will, without asking, saying thanks, or anything. That's kinda crappy, but we did tell people they could download our stuff. I'm talking about fanvids that have been archived without the creators' knowledge or permission - just because apparently anything on YT is fair game.

Seriously, people! Archiving stuff that is not your own without permission!!! WHO DOES THAT?!?!?!?!!!!

So if you've created any AWZ vids in the past few years, you might want to check here* and see if your stuff has been pillaged. I recognise quite a few of them myself. Some of the original vids are still on Youtube, where viewers could leave a comment if they were so inclined. And I know that others were taken down for a reason by the creator. I think it's really shitty that their wishes are not respected - hell, not even considered.

WTF is wrong with this fandom?

* Update: She's now made the folder private (and I was asked to remove the link to my vids in her post. Um, no.). If you've created vids that you don't want archived, you might want to write to her anyway. ([info]amilee123 and [info]redcouchaddict, I know she had included some of yours.)

Morning blues

It's just gone six in the morning. I've been up for an hour. I woke up from a vividly awful dream in which AWZ had cast a faux-Marc who wouldn't even fool soap viewers. Then I indulged in lovely, soul-strengthening comments on our blog from people who believe in us. Now a man is singing drunkenly in the street outside. And something we all love ended today.

In some parts of the world it's St. Patrick's day. Here it's just a very interesting start to Friday.

ETA: A start? Screw that. I'm going back to bed.

I love Aldi!

I am not authorised to disclose why, but I just need to leave her a little sexy lawyer.

Kitty update

I am SO SORRY for not having a chance to respond to all your wonderful thoughts yesterday. Molly is doing well -- after acting all drunken and crazed last night, she's decided that she's sore and wants to cuddle today. I'm keeping a close eye on her so she doesn't lick her stitches too much -- I'm trying to avoid the plastic cone since the last time she wore one she almost hung herself. (Don't ask -- it's something that only my cat is capable of.)

Anyway. Life is hell right now, even without sleep there is no possible way that I am going to get everything done by Friday that needs to be done. Of course, this is the week that DeRo ends and we have all our two-parters and idiots need to be bashed and Eskimos cuddled and I'm not there to do it. A clone, a clone, my kingdom for a clone!

LOLOLOL speaking of, I SAW THE QUEEN TODAY. Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Mountbatten were right outside my apartment. I'm so sleep-deprived that I'd swear I was hallucinating if it hadn't been in the news.

And Unzertrennlich just came up in my shuffle. O universe, you are trying to kill me, aren't you? Excuse me while I hyena myself back into tears.

Vet stuff, the ex stuff, life stuff

Molly McMeow's going under the knife today -- I know good thoughts are at a premium these days, but if you've got any to spare, please send them her way.

And my ex just reminded me why I love him sometimes. When I told him that she was a bit damp and a lot unhappy after I walked to the vets in the pouring rain, he wrote:

Mrrrrggrrrrreowwwwing in the rain, just mrrrrggrrrrreowwwwing in the rain, what a glorious feeling, she's golden again...

and so on... I'm choreographing the dance number now... it'll involve Rudy and lots of puddles!

Man, did I ever need that today.

I am woefully behind on IJ and, well, everything. Time needs to stretch massively before this day is out or I am royally screwed with work. Also, if people could just stop being stupid, that'd be awesome too!

May. 11th, 2010

Laughing? Crying? It's all the same, really

I just have to rant a little tonight. *whips out trusty Eskimo filter and goes to town*

I hate DeRo, apparently. )

It's here!

The new Shiny is here! And has been dubbed Clive because, well, all black and chrome and sleek, who else could he be?

It's a hell of a learning curve, what with Windows 7 (I was on Windows XP) and Office 2007 (I had 2003). It feels really cluttered and things move around too much, or they go faint or opaque, or kind of... I don't know, quiver. I like my programs to sit quietly and behave themselves. Instead, it's like my OS is a class of toddlers hopped up on pixie stix. But I'll get the hang of it, I'm sure. And people say they love it, after a while. We'll see.

I'm trying to keep the old girl chugging away through this weekend, when I'm going to wipe her completely and try to install everything we need for EKP. Please, keep your fingers crossed for me that I don't completely futz everything up.

I am not supposed to be dealing with technology! I am a word person! When did we have to learn to hack into television networks and workaround compatibility issues and finding patches for uncommunicative routers? I would be quite happy with cave drawings, thank you very much.

As long as I get to keep Clive.

An update, of sorts

In response to a couple of posts about IJ being quieter than usual... I honestly can't say I've noticed, because of the surge of activity in the shiny new AWZ asylums, [info]no7_awz and [info]eskimo_kiss. That being said, I have been quiet here. So while yet another computer scan runs, I think I'll do an update.

Today, yes. )

Let. It. Go.

Vlad's up to his madness tonight -- we've just gotten six very abusive comments from him, and banned three new sockpuppets. He's intent on "outing" me for my bitchiness. (Excuse me for a minute. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!)

He's also threatening to publish the emails I sent him back when RTL changed their security and we asked him if he had the tech savvy to help us get the episodes. He didn't, of course, but gave us a stern lecture on how he wished he'd known we were meeting with RTL so he could have coached us on what to say, and that Dennis and Igor were surely involved in this plot to entrap us. I smacked him down for his patronising shit and talking down to us like we were 14-year-old fangirls, it's true, and I'd do it again in a minute, and I don't mind one bit if those emails go public because he was a fuckwit.

I'm too old for this shit.

Nonetheless. His behaviour has gone past trollish, and as much as I do love you guys for standing up for us, there's a very important rule I think we need to follow at this point: DON'T FEED THE TROLL. There's absolutely no point in engaging with him -- just ignore, we'll delete and ban, rinse and repeat.

(Also we deleted that whole thread of comments on 894. There was some good stuff there, really, but the whole thing was just making Aldi and me ill to look at it. I hope you'll understand.)

In much sparklier news, go have a peek at Dennis' IMDb page.

The Special Hell

Last week, a fucking Trojan got into my computer. GAH!!!! These people that create these things, I hope that there is a truly Special Hell where they will writhe in misery for all eternity. I thought I'd tracked the bastard down with my virus scanner, but then little things started going wrong. First I couldn't upload to Youtube, but that's not unusual, Youtube's a picky bitch. Then I couldn't upload pics to Photobucket, and then I couldn't get Windows updates, and then I couldn't get on Chrome or IE. The thing was spreading faster than Stella's lip herpes, and the malware programs I was running would catch it just to have it pop up somewhere else.

So I ended up taking it in to be deloused. And for once, Staples did an incredible job -- I have to hand it to them, they went above and beyond to track down and kill the little bastard, and they only charged me $50. I'm pretty impressed.

In my night offline, I did manage a massive houseleaing, altered and glitterfied three t-shirts, and cooked a pork roast. Productivity kinda rocks... if only I hadn't kept thinking of all I needed to do online.

Now... *looks around* ...what'd I miss?

eta: Going through emails, I just found out that an interview I did (with much help from [info]aldiara was just published in VelvetParkMedia. It's ostensibly about the Gays of Our Lives event, but it's really more about why women like slash and how cool AWZ is. And I think we've got some new converts. :D

First, the lovely sparkle...

For someone turning older than dirt, I had a pretty awesome birthday.

On the other hand, it's been a seriously unshiny week and I'm glad to see the tail end of it. I am trying hard to cling to the good things, and there are some that are just 100% pure sparkle, but man, there's been too much fail. I desperately need a week off from the wank.

And I think it might start now, because someone on EKP asked if Mars Saibert's crappy song from ep296 was "real" and I'm cracking up at his lame videos on Youtube. This one reminds me of the dire lyrics I wrote when I was 14 years old and convinced I wanted to be in Abba. Total LULZ!!

Off to watch Being Human now. Also, YAY CANADA!

Christmas is next week? When the hell did that happen?

Enough already

Hello, dear neglected f-list. Long time no see.

I'm not having a good weekend at all, and today I am closer than I've ever been to tossing my laptop off the roof and joining a commune that disavows that Demon Electricity.

Gah, it feels like all I ever do these days is bitch about technical stuff, sorry for that, but if it would just throw me a fucking bone I would not have to. Aldi and I have already vowed never to take streaming episodes for granted again; now I long for those blissful days when I could complete the entire conversion-editing-rendering process without wanting to bludgeon something.

In happier news, we did close the gap between our old timeline (the AWZ episodes that aired long before we started EKP) and the current storyline we're covering. It's quite an accomplishment -- we've got nearly 500 videos! Not to mention, tons of love from all the viewers. *cuddles you lot*

And we got this adorable comment from some poor naive soul: I was just wondering about the description for one of the episodes. It said "Marian's totally proud of his lover Etienne evading the police". This made me a little confused... did Marian have a thing with Etienne and Mike? I'm a little confused. I thought he was with Nadja? Could you clear this confusion up for me? Aw, bless. No, Schatz, much as we like to pretend that everybody on this show is gay, that's just in our imaginations. SO FAR.

Well, it's time to get back to work and see if I can't battle this into submission. We've got an episode to get out!

Nov. 6th, 2009

After a week and a half of pulling our hair out and shaking angry fists towards Luxembourg, we finally got back to what we should've been doing all along -- promoting this bloody Show! Yes, free publicity, RTL, why do you make this so hard?

The situation's not ideal by any means. Instead of capturing clips directly from the video stream like we used to, now we're stuck spending literally hours on screencaptures. It's totally draining -- the RTL player is, quite frankly, crap. Everytime it stalls, I have to rebuffer and restart the recording. On about a third of the files the soundtrack comes out wonky. And even at its best, the quality is jerky because it is, after all, a string of screencaps. THANK GOD THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN BEFORE REUNION!

Still! We posted episode* and we're getting comments again (they are like a drug, I tell you!) and I'm going to sit here and drink wine and spam like whoa. And if I have enough wine, I just might make a defiant "you can't take the Show sky from me" vid.

Hope you're all ready for an awesome weekend!

* This episode was nabbed before we left for Germany; it's not representative of the new stuff we're getting. You'll know what I mean when you see those in a few days. Boy, will you know what I mean.

Nov. 4th, 2009

If I just crawl back into bed and burrow under the covers, will the world be better when I wake up? I feel like every bit of the shiny world I was in last week has disappeared.

First RTL goes and closes the loophole that let us capture episodes. [personal profile] aldiara and I are sitting amidst piles of hair ripped from our heads while searching for a workaround. It's all extra-maddening because we came home from such a high, ready to dive into all the exciting stuff that we know is coming... and suddenly the door's slammed in our faces.

Then they make things worse by (we think) discontinuing free episodes. I say "we think" because there's no communication of any sort, just a price tag on the current episode. So much for encouraging people to watch the source! How can a corporation be so shortsighted? They have to give a little free to hook people for more -- have they learned nothing from drug pushers. But no, they really don't understand fandom or anything more than making disposable, mediocre entertainment that nobody would ever want to watch more than once.

(But maybe it's just a glitch, and maybe they'll get it fixed, and maybe we'll be able to download eps again. *flings glitter feebly*)

I'm weary from it all though. And then I read about Maine. What is this voting on civil rights bullshit? Last week, in a moment of pissiness over Harper, I said that Canada was no better than the U.S. I officially retract those words.

Hmmm, sorry for the super cranky post. Let's see. THINGS WOT ARE GOOD:

*I have gummi bears.
*My cat's snuggling because it's cold.
*I only have one more client to finish before 6.
*Massive trip report is getting a good response. I admit, I feel the crankiness fade while reading these comments.
