Fandom rocks

Sometimes I forget just how bloody incredible fandom can be. It takes a reminder like this to see how this community, which is so diverse and so disparate, needs to be celebrated, for WE ARE AWESOME.

Torchwood Day Five

Bits and bobs

I have a new icon. Which I adore. *points and giggles*

I also have a new desktop image on my laptop--and instead of my programs being on the left side and icons of projects/work on the right, I've had to move them all to the left-hand side. For some reason, that makes me feel like I've got a lot more to do. What's with that?

This week I've been mainlining Merlin fics. I do love this crack-fed fandom, but I have a low tolerance for fluffy, and too many of these stories threaten to strip the enamel from my teeth.

And yet finding these two gems has been worth it: Waldorph's All the Laughter From Before (Summary: It's pretty, but very distressing. And lo, all is sunshine and daisies... and death, but what can you do?) and headspin_x's In Your Fire, And In Your Flood (Summary: There are moments when Merlin can't tell if he is awake or dreaming; can't quite decipher the slight difference between the two shades. The lines are starting to –). They are very different stories so I shouldn't lump them together like this, other than that they've made me feel similar emotions -- basically, intense flailing and the certainty that I should give up writing altogether because I will never, ever approach anything as complex and layered and ... fuck, I almost used the word transcendent in relation to fanfic, which is just wrong, but these two stories have a beauty that I know I'll never be able to match. And I love that and hate it all at once. But. You should read these stories, I'm sure they'll amaze (and hopefully inspire) you too.

In much, much more frivolous news, you have to read Ask Captain Jack. This is why the Internet exists.

And I watched the new Skins today. Not loving it. The previous season was over-the-top in what the kids got away with, sure, but I never felt like the adults were treated as such one-dimensional characters. (Or am I just blinded by S2 and forgetting S1?) I'm not giving up yet -- I couldn't believe how happy I was just to hear the theme song -- but I hope they can rein it in a bit next time.

Now off to watch the new Shameless. How I've missed my telly!

Monday morning fic rec

Calling all Torchwood fans: go read [info]sarcastic_jo's new story, The Windhovers. (I suggested the name. *is ridiculously proud*) Mystery and adventure and Ianto maybe not quite sane, and great lines like "He preferred Tang over coffee or tea. Of course I knew he was an alien" when Ianto is asked how he knew the truth about a previous boss. This is going to be her best story yet!

I do love a good Friday night

Tonight we're celebrating! [info]sarcastic_jo just finished the long-awaited conclusion of Shade of Ianto and hopefully will be posting later this evening. If you haven't read the previous chapters, what are you waiting for?

Meanwhile, I've been struggling with the ending of my latest fic -- I knew how it was going to end, but every line I needed to get there was like pulling teeth. It's that darn completion thing, I dread it so. But this afternoon, walking back from the wine store, the ending hit me like a snowball in the gob. Now the first draft's done, just needs an edit and a beta and it'll be ready to go!

So this eve we're watching Transformers to celebrate. I haven't been to keen to see it -- this isn't my childhood, I don't even know what a transformer is -- but she swears it's cheesy fun. With enough wine, I'm sure it will be!

RE: that movie meme. You guys are good! You got almost all of them. There are just a few left, with more hints this time. Have another go? )

A pimp post

Okay, first things first:

I'm excited about this -- it's a little different than the free-for-all that was Bring Back the Porn, with some really interesting prompts. Should be fun!

I'm all caught up on Torchwood and SGA now -- I feel like I've really accomplished something. At some point I need to write up my thoughts on just how much Gwen's behaviour irks me, both in endangering her teammates and being thoroughly unsuited for what she's asked to do at Torchwood. This is painfully apparent in comparing her with Tosh in the last two episodes. But that's going to take more brainpower than I have this morning, so instead I'll just rec [info]sarcastic_jo's wonderful tag for "Meat" called On Atlas' Shoulders.

(And I have to confess how envious I am that she can just belt out something like this in a day while I'm agonising over a paragraph!)

She also made this great icon, with my new favourite Ianto face.

Have a great Saturday, folks!

Dec. 19th, 2007

[info]sarcastic_jo just sent me the TORCHWOOD S2 trailer! I am now useless. It's embarrassing to admit how many times I've restarted it just to watch Ianto touch the back of his head at the beginning.....

BTW, if you haven't been reading Jo's incredible Shades of Ianto story, you really should. This epic adventure now spans the pre-Torchwood years, follows closely the canon of S1, and then builds up into an incredible AU in her vision of S2. She'll be finishing it about the time that S2 starts (else she'll face near-constant wheedling by yours truly!) so if you've been missing the TW team during this hiatus, this is just the thing to get you pumped for January.

Saturdays are great, aren't they?

What a nice day. I woke up, posted porn, made a big breakfast, read some porn, took a long nap, read some more porn, made dinner, read more porn. Every day should be so peaceful.

And there's some really great stuff out there! I've read awesome Dead Poets' Society wankfic, lots and lots of hot HP stuff, some gorgeous Atlantis fics, and even several original pieces that knocked my socks off. Now I wish I'd bookmarked the ones I liked so I could rec them, but that would have required foresight and, well, my brain's taking a holiday too. But one I definitely recommend is "Tranquilo", a Burnt Money fic that just broke my heart. Oh, and if you haven't yet read [info]sarcasticchick's wonderful SGA/Torchwood x-over, you definitely should check it out. You can find all the rest at [info]bbtp_challenge.

You know, I think today finally broke the grip that LJ's had on me. I've been going to IJ first, reading it, and then heading over to LJ to read my flist hold-outs. But when I went over today, I spent about 5 minutes flying through, realising that the only thing that interested me were these cool goddess icons, and came flying back to IJ where I've been amused all day. *hugs flist*

However! I do have one small gripe. WTF is up with this "highlight to read the warnings" trend?** Do they think they're being sneaky and won't get caught by people looking for Very Bad Things™ in their fics? Sorry, but that's not how the Internet works. It's still text, even if it's white text, and it's still going to show up in a search.

But that's a small annoyance on an otherwise perfectly pleasant evening. Hope y'all are all enjoying your weekends!

ETA: And btw, I'm not talking about big spoilery warnings that give away things like "death of a major character." No, the ones I've seen today include things like:

* Unbeta’d, femmeslash crack
* Minor in a sexual situation...dripping come?
* Male/male sex

ETA2: Okay, I screwed up -- the highlighting was how [info]bbtp_challenge requested headers be formatted. Aaaand I guess that means I didn't follow directions. *facepalms*

Now, I have been seeing more highlighting recently, before BBTP, but hopefully most of it will go away now.

I wrote a fic!

It's called Boys Will Be Boys and it's a Torchwood AU set in [info]sarcasticchick's Shades of Ianto 'verse. (If you haven't read that story yet, please do, because it's just gorgeous. And because this won't make a lick of sense if you haven't.) My story is set years early, during the summer of Ianto's 14th year. It's rated PG because it refers to minors in a sexual context—nothing terribly raunchy, but it's worth a warning.

Boys Will Be Boys

(Because of recent events with LJ/6A, I've created a fic journal at InsaneJournal and I'm going to gradually move all my stories there. The link'll take you there.)
